Well, there is a standard, but OEM's seem to be choosing to not use it. That's fine, it's their choice. They still have a responsibility to the consumers that use their products though.
They seem to be crossing a line now in that they are changing that functionality after the product has already been released. This is going to cause a lot of confusion. People spend money on charging accessories that may or may not work for the life of the product.
I'm currently undecided between the Note 7 and V20, but if this is how LG is going to behave I'm inclined to avoid them (also hoping that Samsung doesn't do the same thing). It could be a carrier thing, but that seems like a very odd thing for a carrier to want to mess with.
I don't think LG is unique and I think its carrier inflicted. Conspiracy theory: they don't want us using different cables or chargers because they could fry the phone. Apple has done that by putting chips in their cables so some of the cheap ones get outdated.
