Annoying 'Complete action using' popup 50 times per day[Solved]

This is happening to me very frequently. I can be:
on a phone call
using gmail
on any web page
in just about any app
I get a popup at the bottom of the screen, you know the one:
"Complete action using"
and then the option of the 3 browsers I have installed, Chrome, Firefox, Tor
and then the "Just once" or "Always"
I can bottom left arrow out of it, but occasionally I've accidentally hit Just Once or Always. If I do Chrome opens up with a new tab with a web page for the google play store pointing to Westpac (that's a bank, I'm in Australia) for their app, which I already have and use.
This is happening, and I'm not joking, 50 to 100 times per day, and is very annoying. I'm guessing it is something to do with a permission somewhere but I really have no clue.

Samsung Note 8 all up to date

Welcome to Android Central! Does this persist if you temporarily uninstall the Westpac app?

If you go between 3 browser a lot it will ask this frequently, go to settings>apps>default apps and select one as default browser , can also try in same Manu there but 3 dots upper right corner tap>reset app preference

Thank you! Yes, I am new here. Long time Samsung user since the S3.

Yes, I have tried uninstalling, it's had no effect. This happens every time I wake up my phone, as well as numerous other occasions.

I do not switch between browsers all that often. Chrome is set as the default browser app.

I don't believe it is browser related. If I select, say, Chrome, or Firefox and then hit Always, then it will just automatically open a new tab pointing to the Google play store for Westpac. After a while it seems to 'forget' and I get the popup again.

I would go into your chrome settings and check that notifications are turned off, as well as popups and redirects blocked in the site settings. I suspect that banking website is abusing Chrome's push notifications ability to spam you to install their app. Your other browsers also likely have similar settings.

I could be wrong, but that was the first thing that came to mind when you said this happens frequently regardless of what you're doing.

Something might be up with OP banking app westpac maybe check its permission if its allowed to change system settings?

Yes mustang7757, my default app page looks pretty much exactly the same. Chrome is the default browser app. I have a 'default app selection' which is set to 'ask before setting default actions', but I don't think if I set it to auto it will help, it will just run away and open the offending web page.

For anyone who is interested :)

Solved!! Ends up being an NFC (Near Field Communication) issue. As a boomer I am inclined to use a wallet cover on my phone as we are dead scared of cracking them, lol. And I got a replacement Westpac card just recently. And I was putting it in my phone wallet right near my phone. And it was triggering an NFC response from my phone, hence the call to open up the play store web page for Westpac. I also noted a new tag on restarting the phone. See pic attached.
BTW I performed a factory reset to get rid of this demon, seemed to work for a day or two and then the descent into hell started up again.
