Annoying messages app quirk

Every time I use the share menu and select messages to send a link via SMS it always defaults to MMS unless I delete the 'subject' part of it. I wasted a lot of money on out of interact charges before I found out what was happening. Anyone else getting this?

Well, that's because you're sending a link,and that gets converted to a MultiMedia Message (MMS) automatically. Your best alternative is to share the link as text is to share it to COPY TO CLIPBOARD and then paste that into an SMS. I know, not a clean solution, but that's one way to do it. Not sure if you use a different messaging app would do the same or not (you could try using Hangouts for SMS and see if it does the same).
