I was just wondering if I needed the phone to buy apps on Google Play? I was looking at some things and noticed SwiftKey 3 is on sale this week and is something I was interested in trying when the GS3 came. Could I buy it now and then when I get my GS3 set up it would d/l it? Same with Amazon. Can I grab any of the free apps between now and when the phone arrives and just build up a library? Or do you have to have a phone attached to the accounts?

I believe if you have a Google account you can purchase them from the play store on your computer and just download them to your device when you get it.

Yep, so long as you use the same Google account on your phone as you did to purchase them on the computer.

All of the apps you download with the Google account are saved. So even if you lose your phone it will automatically redownload them when you sign in with your Google account. (not that I know from experience or anything:o )

Zhara is correct. I highly recommend SwiftKey 3. I got it free from Amazon app store a while back but just today deleted it and bought it from Google play for half price.

Amazon apps take too long to get updates. Plus, it's such a good keyboard, I wanted to support them.

I had the same question. The problem I'm having is that you need to have a supported device before you can buy anything with your account. I have a Verizon S3 on pre-order (replacing a Blackberry) and cannot buy it. Error: "You havent accessed the Google Play Store app (the white shopping bag app icon) on your device with this account."

That stinks. Bet it works on amazon though. 50% deal is over there too.

I logged onto play to grab it at 50%, turns out I already had bought it a long time ago, guess I didn't like it.

Amazon.com: SwiftKey 3: Appstore for Android

I actually got it for free on Amazon, I think, when they first started. They used to have some great software for free. Now it seems to have gone downhill for the free stuff.

Thanks good idea, but Amazon has the same limitation: "To purchase app from the Amazon Appstore and install them to your Android, you will need to have the Amazon Appstore app installed on your device."

Hmm. If it just has to be tied to a phone, maybe I can wipe my wife's old Droid Inc. and set it up with my Google account? I'd just activate her phone on my line, but I don't want to give VZW an opportunity to screw anything up. I'm not touching my account until the S3 is in my hands.

I don't think you'd have to activate the phone on your line. Just setup your google account on the phone via WiFi. Should work.

Agreed, that should work. What a dumb limitation, I guess it's to prevent people from buying stuff that won't work on their phone. Possibly for fraud too I guess, having another way to identify someone.

Yeah I don't think the Store knows how I am connecting to it, or cares, seeing so many people use wifi on their phones anyway. Now I just need to see if she is ready to delete her phone, even though she has had her 4s for months now.

she doesn't need to delete anything.... go to settings, accounts, and add another google account. Then, open the Play Store, hit menu, and change to your account. Wa la.
