Another bug.

Hey, man, I'm not the one who brought Windows tablets up in this thread. I was just responding to your statement that you "would be very very very surprised if it actually DID do a better job than the Note 10.1 at Note taking".

I bought the Note because it's the best thing available TODAY for doing what I want. Plus, I am no longer working for the company I was a year ago. Now I only really have 1 project to manage. :-)

Right. I know who brought up the Windows tablet without you indicating it. For one, it wasn't me and I also never said anywhere that Microsoft DIDN'T make a better note taking experience. I said i'd be "surprised". And technically, your link didn't prove anything it was just some random dude's opinion. Well....someone else may not share that opinion and that doesn't mean anyone is wrong.

So my point (yet again) is that you bought the Note 10.1 for a reason. You yourself just said it's the best thing available TODAY. So why are we comparing it against something that doesn't exist yet? When Microsoft releases it's golden tablet that everyone is so excited for, would you be annoyed if I said......"well....this tablet is decent, but it has NOTHING on the technology that will be released in 2032"

Yeah.........I would say if the Note doesn't meet your needs for note taking, then you're probably better off with something else. No offense, but between the shape matching, the THIN pen line, and the thinner pencil line....if those don't help you in making graphs and charts for statistics then I don't know what will except a pen and paper from Staples that will run you about $3.

I haven't ever used a Windows tablet so I can't say this for sure, but I would be very very very surprised if it actually DID do a better job than the Note 10.1 at Note taking.

Yes. It is clear that you haven't ever used any tablet with an active digitizer before the Note. I am not saying that the Note is a bad tablet. It is the best Android tablet with a digitizer, but does not hold a candle to the Samsung Series 7 Slate for example. The advantage of the Note is the price compared to a Windows tablet. It is about 1/3 as much. I was hoping to replace my Samsung Series 7 Slate with the Note and the Zenbook Prime UX21A. I might be better off keeping the S7, but I am still testing and comparing the two. I love everything about the Note and will give it another week to see if I can accept some of the inking shortcomings over the S7. The thickness of the ink line is something that Samsung can change pretty easily and maybe they will in a future update.

And no I am not going to use paper and a pencil. I moved all of my notes to electronic versions years ago and refuse to go back to pen and paper.

Based on the last dozen or so posts in this thread, it sounds like the Note is between a rock and a hard place. It's not quite up to par with a Windows tablet/One Note, but it's better than any other tablet for taking notes. Maybe Samsung needed to define it's purpose and audience a little better. Maybe it's nothing better than for annotating documents and touching up photos.

I got the Note because I've been through 3 or 4 Android tablets, and I am still looking for a good one. This, IMO, is the best so far. And I'm tired of having sheets of paper around my desk full of notes I scribble down while on the phone with a client (I'm a developer). So for my use, the notes/pen work perfectly.

There is a big difference between something that will be available in 20 years and something that, in fact, DOES EXIST. The Surface and Surface Pro have been shown to the public. Members of the press and others have actually had hands-on. The specs are published and available for you to review.

So, comparing the Note to something that will be available in 20 years is (more) hot air. Comparing it to the Surface tablets is completely relevant. Unfortunately, until the Surface is released, a lot of those comparisons will remain pretty speculative - but based on specs, educated guesses, and actual facts of how other slates that are already running Windows 8 are performing (as related in that XDA post that I linked earlier). Get that? Windows 8 is already out. A lot of us already have it. There are already other tablets that are running Windows 8. The Surface Pro will just be another tablet that runs Windows 8 - with some nice hardware features that don't affect so much a comparison of note-taking capabilities.

Remember how the Note 10.1 was unveiled in February and people had hands on? Remember how much different the end product is? That's why I say the surface isn't a fair comparison until we see the final revisions.

The other thing, you called me out earlier for not having a source on the price of the surface pro, and yet here you defend yourself because of "educated guesses". Seems like a double standard. But even still, I return to my previous point that the surface is going to be far more expensive than the Note is, as indicated by techgeek32.

I am not understanding why you have this need to defend the Windows tablets when I did not attack them. I personally feel that dollar for dollar, the Note is a better deal. You can feel otherwise and I am okay with that. But stop trying to convince me otherwise based on YOUR needs.

I am not understanding why you have this need to defend the Windows tablets when I did not attack them.

But you did. You said you cannot imagine that they would be better for note taking. And, in fact, there are tablets right now, today, running Windows 8 that are being reported, by the people using them, some of whom own GN10s, to be better for taking handwritten notes.

Actually that is not an attack. A perfectly awesome device could be lacking in one aspect in comparison to another without it suddenly being a peice of trash. I didn't attack the windows tablet! I'm sure it does plenty of things far better than the Note. And again.......if there are Windows 8 holy grails out there, why the heck don't you buy one of those instead of this Note? You can't say the Note is the best available TODAY and then 3 posts later say there are others that are better.

And I am glad you take the opinions of "those running them" as eternal gospel truth, but I form my own opinions based off of MY needs and not theirs. You make your choice, and I will make mine. My choice is that I cannot imagine a windows tablet doing a better job at Note taking than my Note does, FOR THE NEEDS THAT I HAVE. I didn't buy the Note based off the note taking needs that YOU have. I don't care if some device that isn't even released yet might do a better job. Until it's in my hands, it's useless to me and is not better than the device that IS in my hand.

Again, you don't know what the Microsoft Surface will be, because it is not out yet. Things change, and tech companies OFTEN alter the display product after it's originally announced. I am using my tablet for school, and the Note is PERFECT for that. If I ever decide to build my own island and plan out an entire civilization of my own, I will look into getting one of these Windows 8 perfections. But until then i'll stick with a sensibly priced tablet that works.

Upon further reflection......I don't care why you bought this instead of the Microsoft Tablets. I am glad you like Windows 8 and I hope it works out well for you. I'm sure it will. There's no sense in trying to convince each other to accept one another's opinion.

- I have never said I like Windows 8. I said I have it.

- I have never said that there are other tablets better than the Note. I did say that the One Note application is more mature than anything on Android. And I made the observation that there is at least one person (on XDA) who has a Note AND has other tablets running Windows 8 who has stated that the W8/One Note solution is better for note taking. I didn't say he was right or wrong. Just pointing out that he is there and, apparently, has more actual hands-on experience with the subject at hand than anybody here (apparently) does.

I'm sorry you're so sensitive on this subject. I think if you re-read what I wrote, you will see that I haven't said anything to deserve being yelled at.

I think you know that A) you weren't being yelled at. And B) You are obviously the one that got sensitive because the second I questioned the Holy Grail, you posted a link and referred to that link as though it was God dictating the better of the two devices.

Again, it's okay for you to prefer the Holy Grail. I prefer the Note 10.1. It's awesome that random person on XDA prefers the Holy Grail. But once more, I prefer the Note. I think the note does a great job and I think the Holy Grail probably will too but it is not released right now. I guess I could have saved money and gone to my classes pretending to use the Holy Grail, but that wouldn't have gotten me anywhere. I prefer to hold the device in my hand.

You argue a point for 2 days, and then try to act like you weren't REALLY that emotionally invested in it. So either you like to completely waste time, or you are lying about it. Either way is ridiculous. I am not going to pretend that I don't get annoyed by you trying to convert me to the Holy Grail. Because i've told you mutliple times that I am happy with what I have in the Note because it does what I need it to do.

Ok, this thread is really off topic. Who cares who says what, and who thinks what tablet is better? This thread turned into a pis*ing match at this point between two posters. When the Surface comes out I'm sure someone will do a comparison review. And let's be realistic, no matter how much anyone loves their Note 10.1, we are tech geeks. I know I'll purchase a Surface tablet just because I love new technology. You guys probably will too.

What I find odd is that the argument is over a Windows tablet and not an iPad! Kind of refreshing for once. Because we all know the iPad is the superior tablet! (Insert sarcasm Smilie here).

That's actually why I was so tempted to keep up this nonsense. It was enjoyable to debate about something other than Apple! I am a sucker for debating devices, unfortunately I can lose my sense and just keep it up for stupid reasons. My apologies for hijacking the thread and wasting everyone's time who wants to read about Android.

No need to apologize, I do it too. Everyone does. People are really passionate about their devices. And both you guys were at least not name calling and having an intelligent conversation. That's more than I can say for most posters on here when talking about other devices.

It would be so much easier if there were one clear winner in the tablet game. I know iPad has the market share, but I think it's getting old and tired, and people are looking for other solutions. I really want an Android (or Windows, or even the PlayBook) tablet to succeed and be a major player. I think in the end it benefits us, the consumer, because each one tries to out do the other.

Great, now I've hijacked the thread :)

I often wonder when Apple fans will get sick of all the lawsuits. Cause honestly, if Google started going ape shiz on everyone around them like Apple does, i'd be turned off no matter how good the product was.

I do think the iPad's format factor is preferable to any of the "widescreen" tablets. :D

Seriously, I would like my GN10 even better if it were actually shaped like a piece of paper.

I thought I was the only one that like the 4:3 screen over the Android 16:9. I'm not much of a movie watcher on tablets though so maybe that's why I don't mind it. Compared to an iPad, the Android 10.1 tablets feel huge.

Funny you mention the piece of paper shape... Last night I was writing down some notes for a meeting on Monday, and I realized I can't fit as many notes as I could a piece of paper. Mainly because of the width (I'm write big). I was thinking how cool it would be if it were 8.5 x 11". Although I guess I could just write in landscape mode and have almost the same width.

Yeah, but then you can't see the whole note at once.

I would love to be able to see my whole note at once and have it be the same size as if I printed it out.

I agree with everyone. For the money the Note is about the most complete option with an active digitizer available now. There is the HP Slate ($600), Fujitsu Q550 ($800) and the S7 Slate ($1-1500) all Windows tablets running Windows 7. The previous poster is correct in that OneNote is really the most complete notetaking app on any platform that is available. It just depends on ones needs how much they want to spend. The HP Slate is an awesome little device at 8.9", but the screen quality is poor. If it had an IPS or much brighter display I would have kept it. Unfortunately all of the Windows tablets right now except for the S7 and ASUS 121 use slow ATOM processors which are fine for battery life and running windows apps, but for web browsing or consuming media such as Netflix or HBO it does not work. So then you are left with tablets that are three times the price of the Note and that eliminates a large group of users. Windows 8 will not provide all that much different of an inking experience than Windows 7 does right now. The difference will be higher res displays, thinner and lighter tablets and portable or integrated keyboard options like the Transformer Prime Android Tablet. The huge advantage with the Note is that you can consume your media in 1080p with no problem, have a bunch more apps at your disposal and still have a phenomenal inking experience that comes close to Windows. I don't like Windows 8 and will not be upgrading any of my Windows devices to it. For those serious business users that want to ink, the Metro (whatever the new name is) UI just gets in the way. It is fine for a Windows touch screen only tablet that wants to compete with Android and Apple, but serious business users will still want something similar to Windows 7. Hopefully more developers will push Samsung to not sit idle on their SNote software and make continuous improvements that only enhance the experience. Samsung is not trying to battle Windows, but rather to give consumers a more robust option than the touch screen only iPad.

All we need now is for microsoft to instill their OneNote app on Android with handwriting recognition. That would give a similar experience on the note 10 as on the microsoft tablets coming soon.

It wouldn't be quite the native experience, but would give the note a chance at some better market share. Add the skydrive app and a pretty good integration into microsoft's windows 8 ecosystem for android devices for me.
