Desire HD - LTE drain = Thunderbolt

Has anyone read about the desire HD battery life? I have a feeling we are about to be seriously let down again in regards to battery life. i know this processor is a little more efficient and all but it would stand to reason that any small gain in battery life due to processor will be offset by power hungry LTE.

That is my only complaint with HTC. Its like they are building a BMW that is edging out the Mercedes in every way, design, performance, ergonomics, but the price to pay is that it gets half the gas mileage as the mercedes. But, dont fret, they have a huge pack you can put on the trunk that severely disfigures the original design of the vehicle that will get its mileage back on par with the mercedes. Bummer.

because it is another high powered radio! just like having wifi or bluetooth on, it drains battery, but moreso as it is higher powered than either. maybe power hungry is the wrong word. but i believe that is the consensus out there.

i figured as much, and it can *probably* be assumed, but until we actually have a device on LTE in our hands, we definately can't say for sure.

Well as an owner of an evo yes 4g will drain your battery faster. Like it doesn't drain already fast enough in the first place lol

wimax =/= LTE

and from what i've read, LTE radios use much less power than their wimax counterparts.

Well regardless since the Thunderbolt is an evo on verizon it will have the same battery life basically. And it just isn't that good. But the phone is just so pimp it doesn't matter

totally off base. newer, more efficient snapdragon processor plus 700mhz LTE frequency is more powerful, getting better building penetration than Sprint's wimax frequency. The better the coverage/stronger the signal is the better the battery life because the 4g radio will have a stronger signal and not having to constantly scan for 4g like the Evo is doing alot of times. When I had my Evo, even here in Dallas where Sprint has decent Wimax coverage, my 4g signal was in and out. You can't just assume that because a device is similar to another that it is going to have the same battery life. There are many variables involved, carrier and hardware specific and just because the 2 devices look alike and have the same form factor the Thunderbolt is not an Evo as you stated above.

Edit: I'm not trashing the Evo, it's a fine device and I've recommended it to many of my friends. Probably one of my favorite devices I've owned, Sprint just didn't work out for me.

if the evo has SLCD (which i did not know), what in the hell makes people think that this will not suffer from the same bad battery life that the evo suffered. so we have three hopes for better battery life:

1.more efficient processor
2.LTE being lighter on the juice than wimax
3.better battery management and charging software/algorithms

sounds like a decent shot to me.

that sux that the evo used SLCD, i thought it used LCD and was hoping for a semi drastic improvement over that. with resolution being a very competitive thing in mobile devices, im still a little surprised they didnt increase the display tech in this device. oh well theres always the next one right!

Agreed.

Wimax shouldn't be compared to LTE in ANY way. For starters, wimax broadcasts on the 2.5-2.6ghz frequency which requires more power to travel the same distance as a 700mhz band would. Not to mention wimax is using an older encoding system, so one would hope that LTE is more efficient.

We will soon find out.

Some folks who have been testing the TB have stated that the battery life is very poor. This seems to be a major difference between the TB and Bionic. Motorola went with DDR 2 memory, the Tegra 2 (both of which are lower voltage and believe it or not 2 cores should take less battery) and they still dropped a 1900 mah battery in that biotch. So it seems that did a lot to reduce over all power consumption to counter act the effects of the LTE radio.

Yes as a technology I have read that LTE is more efficient, but we all have to remember that these are all first generation devices. They won't be as efficient as we would like.

I think I like HTC more, but the bionic just seems better thought out to me. Especially since over the next 2 years or so it will be all about dual core.

I am just really afraid that the TB will follow in its predecessor's footsteps (DINC, Evo, desire HD) and have very bad battery life.

i agree with everything you said. i WANT to buy the HTC. other than a quick stint with OG Droid i have only used HTC inc. I would love to keep the brand loyalty alive but i just dont know if i can. I have pretty much talked myself into buying the TBOLT on one year and waiting for HTC dual core offering in next 10-12 months. but, I can tell you one thing right now, the battery life in the DINC was HORRID, TERRIBLE, almost INEXCUSABLE. I will wait to hear how it is before i buy TBOLT, but i refuse to give a company my money when they blatently put out a phone in which an extended battery is a necessity. i would rather pay extra up front than to feel cheated by subpar battery performance. these phones are tested extensively before released. they know how long the battery lasts. i literally have a vision of one of the HTC executives laughing and saying oh f#$ing well, they can buy the ridiculous looking extended battery, Huaww ha ha ha. i would be an immediate defector if the Bionic was sans locked bootloader.

But the Bionic wasn't done, isn't out and we can't say for sure how either one will do in battery life until real world tests are done. Long ago I gave up and recognized that bigger batteries are needed and that we have to add them ourselves. Sure it sucks but if you want all the bells and whistles we all demand and more we need bigger batteries, its that simple.

Of course all of these mfg's could go the route of non swappable batteries ala apple design which to me sucks because you have to add a bulky battery case to get the extra battery life and you cannot remove the battery if you say needed to for whatever reason (don't want to be tracked) etc.

im not saying put non swappable batteries in them. just an adequate battery to make it through the entire day for the average SMART PHONE user. with all of the standard widgets, email, web browsing, phone calls, texting etc. if it needs to be yea thick or yea wide to do it, make it so. dont make it a ridiculous hump add on that costs $60. incorporate it into the design as it should be.
