Any AOSP Roms for the LG G3?

I've been scouring xda the past couple days but it looks like development is just getting going on the G3. Does anyone know if there are any ASOP/cyanogenmod/AOKP type roms for the G3 yet?

Re: AOSP Roms

Not yet. Effort is still under way to unlock the non-TMobile variants. Once that occurs, there will be a lot more interest in 3rd party ROM development.

All we have is root for now. It's just a waiting game

Re: AOSP Roms

There is one aosp ROM in early test builds... Some stuff is still not working.

But I will say this, looks like we're in for a treat though.. It's blazing fast and responsive.

Sounds promising :-)

That's very good news. I didn't hold onto my G2 long enough to see any roms on it. But my G3 is sticking around

I think I saw someone had a really early build based on cyanogenmod. Can't wait to try it out once its closer to daily driver status

Oh, I'm pretty psyched about it. It actually runs exceptionally well... there are a few things that aren't functional at the moment; sound, camera, maybe a few others. But keep in mind that this is really an early build and it is the first AOSP rom for the G3 that I've found anywhere.

Things I've noticed: speed, speed, speed. The transition speed is striking. Opening the app drawer, recents, opening settings, going back to the home screen. I haven't turned on the GPU overlay to see where frames are getting dropped, but it feels like my Nexus 5 turned to 11. I'm not saying it in the "OMG, this new kernel made my phone 1000 times faster" placebo kind of way... if I had another G3 to post a side by side of the two going through a series of tasks, the AOSP build would run laps around the stock one.

So I'm looking forward to more ROMs to come.... Though, it doesn't make me feel a little bit disappointed in LG with the Optimus UI on the G3... their while "Simple is the new..." whatever they are calling it. They might have cleaned up some of components of the UI that got some criticism on the G2... it's pretty clear that they trod a little heavy on the framework. Why, oh why do OEMs feel the need to re-invent the wheel like they do? They should take a page out of Moto and just add, not replace.... we'd all be so much better for it.

Though, I have a suspicion that Android L might help change that. Where KitKat was highspeed/low drag....like an Ferrari Challenge Stradale... Android L has a much more polished and refined UI that might encourage OEMs to not fuss with it so much. With L coming with the upcoming Nexus phone(s), people will get a chance to see how awesome it'll look and that might dissuade OEMs from changing too much (wishful thinking)

You can download the ROM here... if you want to take a look. Again, it's not a daily driver, so make sure to make a nand backup.... Oh, how I wish they ported MultiROM to the G3 (its on the G2, so hopefully soon!).

Ahhh. This clearly isn't for the verizon variant. But I'm still keeping up with the thread

Re: AOSP Roms

Thanks LeoRex! I spent a good amount of time reading about that and I'm excited. I have a t-mobile G3 so I could flash it, but I might wait a little longer to see if some of the bugs are worked out. Looks like the dev wants to bring it to more devices once someone figures out how to get around the locked bootloader

Well... the bootloader is the one thing kind holding back the flood waters, and there are some good teams working on it. Trust me, there's a bunch of people itching to get some good ROMs on this device.

But yeah, it isn't ready for daily driving duties yet... more a playground than anything else.

To be honest, I'm not 100% sure that I'd run one of the AOSP roms if they were ready to roll... there are a few features that I might lose that I'd have a hard time parting with. The Knock code/Double Tap to wake stuff is a feature available on several custom kernels on other phones, but they do so without accessing the oh-so-important low-power core features of Qualcomm's chipsets. I assume that doing so requires some licensing considerations... LG has permission, we don't. So the knock stuff could come at the cost of higher power consumption. And it might be hard to get the laser AF working.... which would be a shame to lose. And I'm 100% we'd lose Wi-Fi Calling... which wouldn't be that big a deal for me.. but it's still something.

Oohh that's true. I just haven't used AOSP in awhile so I thought it might be fun. I used to Rom like crazy back in the day, but haven't done it in a couple years

Re: AOSP Roms

Tried the rom that LeoRex linked to. Damn is it fast! Like I swear it was even faster than I remember my Nexus 5 being. It was great coming back to the stick LG rom. So far looks like camera, external speaker, and vibration are the major things not working. Also looks like a other few is working on a version of cm11 but is running into the exact same bugs

Yeah, maybe its just a placebo... but I thought the same thing. I'll have to load it up and do a side by side with my wife's N5 to see if there's a difference. But it does scream.

As for the issues... those things are to be expected. Model specific bits, like the camera, speakers, etc.... those might take a little time to hash out the details before they can get them running. I haven't going swimming in the ROM-making pool yet so I have no clue, but I wonder if anyone has gone about building one from the opposite direction... take the stock OEM and peel back the UI framework keeping as much of the underlying hardware stuff as possible... after all, it's their fussing with the UX that gets on our nerves, not their camera drivers.
