Re: AOSP Roms
Sounds promising
Oh, I'm pretty psyched about it. It actually runs exceptionally well... there are a few things that aren't functional at the moment; sound, camera, maybe a few others. But keep in mind that this is really an early build and it is the first AOSP rom for the G3 that I've found anywhere.
Things I've noticed: speed, speed, speed. The transition speed is striking. Opening the app drawer, recents, opening settings, going back to the home screen. I haven't turned on the GPU overlay to see where frames are getting dropped, but it feels like my Nexus 5 turned to 11. I'm not saying it in the "OMG, this new kernel made my phone 1000 times faster" placebo kind of way... if I had another G3 to post a side by side of the two going through a series of tasks, the AOSP build would run laps around the stock one.
So I'm looking forward to more ROMs to come.... Though, it doesn't make me feel a little bit disappointed in LG with the Optimus UI on the G3... their while "Simple is the new..." whatever they are calling it. They might have cleaned up some of components of the UI that got some criticism on the G2... it's pretty clear that they trod a little heavy on the framework. Why, oh why do OEMs feel the need to re-invent the wheel like they do? They should take a page out of Moto and just add, not replace.... we'd all be so much better for it.
Though, I have a suspicion that Android L might help change that. Where KitKat was highspeed/low drag....like an Ferrari Challenge Stradale... Android L has a much more polished and refined UI that might encourage OEMs to not fuss with it so much. With L coming with the upcoming Nexus phone(s), people will get a chance to see how awesome it'll look and that might dissuade OEMs from changing too much (wishful thinking)
You can download the ROM here... if you want to take a look. Again, it's not a daily driver, so make sure to make a nand backup.... Oh, how I wish they ported MultiROM to the G3 (its on the G2, so hopefully soon!).
