Any chance of this getting Gingerbread?

One of the reasons I purchased my Optimus S off-contract from eBay was because I wanted to get out of the 2-year contract game. It didn't hurt that it is an inexpensive phone.

It is great to find a decent phone that can be purchased outright. I see them show up on Craig's list for as low as $120....though I've so far, missed the cheapest ones. Our next contract matures in August and I'll be able to upgrade to the latest greatest then. In the meantime the Optimus S will do nicely.

If it makes any of you guys excited, after I or someone gets an AOSP 2.2 ROM running, our next step will be CyanogenMod. I've been talking with a developer at XDA who did extremely good work for the HTC Hero (he made kernels), and he has been helping me with this stuff... and with his help we could get 2.3 running. Oh, and he said he might get the Optimus S as well :)

There is a 2.3 rom in the beginning stages for optimus one on xda. Instructions on how to compile are in the thread. Just waiting for someone with computing power to start playing with it for us.

figured i'd post an update to this. while browsing on pcmag.com, i came across this:
Gingerbread Updates for Android Phones: What's the Holdup? | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

basically, a sprint rep mentioned to them that the optimus s is looking at a feb. release for 2.3.
