Any chance to still have a touchscreen-only Galaxy S for Sprint?

Now that the Epic 4G is announced, I would imagine this means there would be no touchscreen-only Galaxy S variant for Sprint. Obviously with the Evo in place, that could be somewhat redundant. On the other hand, a smaller and lighter device is attractive.

Any thoughts?

I doubt it. If you don't want the keyboard you'll probably have to get the T-Mobile or AT&T version. This phone isn't much larger than the T-Mobile version and it's not much smaller than the Evo.

If you want a smaller lighter no keyboard android device on sprint, get a hero. You can't have smaller/lighter and have all the bells and whistles.

If you want a touch screen only device get the gimped EVO. The Epic is only 0.06" thicker the the EVO. 0.50 compared to 0.56. That's less than the Palm Pre.

HTC has a better development community... One thing I will miss if I jump to this phone.

I think Sprint went the way they did with the Epic, making it a keyboard phone, to give it's customers options. If you want no keyboard, then there's the EVO. If you want a keyboard, then there's the Epic. You really can't go wrong with either or. I doubt Sprint will come out with a keyboardless Epic, but you never know.

Plus it's a direct competition against Verizon's DROID X & DROID 2

I think the whole reason the Epic has a keyboard is to differentiate it from the EVO. Sprint probably doesn't want two high-end Android phones with very little to distinguish them from each other (for the average customer at least).

I feel like Samsung is already releasing the upgrade to the Moment as their "keyboard-option" phone. I don't see why this one had to have a keyboard as well. I really wish this phone was just touch-screen only like its brethren. I've used phones with QWERTY keyboards for years and I'm tired of them. I'm very fast with a soft keyboard, and the added bulk is just annoying. I'd absolutely love a touchscreen only Epic :( Looks like I may end up just getting the evo after all

Edit: The more I think about it, the more I think the epic is the better choice on pretty much every front :( You can turn off the touchwiz UI, right? I hope it's out by august...

Haha, you're sooo on the fence about which phone to get.

Lol, a few days ago I would have said I would never buy a touchwiz. I hope I can turn it off too cause this phone is growing on me

You cannot fully turn off touchwiz, just like you cannot fully turn off sense as these OS are what run the contacts and calendar programs. Default Android database options for these functions are NOT on the phones. You can run Launcher PRo, which will hide sense or touchwiz in the background, but will NOT turn off the standard skin overlays.

I'd go with the Galaxy if you want to do this as the additional performance of the processor will help run the other skin in the background. When I ran launcher pro on Evo the phone LAGGED, enough that Launcher Pro wasn't worth it to me.

Now if you wish to ROOT... that may be another story... but for me, no thanks.

rooting isn't as scary as it seems. I've rooted my Hero for what seems like forever, and I'm so glad I did. I've been running 2.1 update 1 a month before it was leaked for the Hero (based on HTC Legend, or Eris leaks). I can truly say, I've probably tried every type of ROM, and they each have their benefits and drawbacks. I don't particularly like AOSP ROMs, but they are faster (for the most part).

I have an Evo and I like it and love Android, but I am drooling over the Epic 4G and the keyboard! Thank you Sprint for giving me an option.

I have to admit- the more I think about this the more I'm confused...

Verizon has:
Droid Incredible
Droid 2
Droid X
Droid Fascinate

Most of these have VERY similar "high end" specs, with varying screen sizes, and screen technologies, and 3 different manufacturers all on the same carrier.

Sprint has only 2 high end phones. Epic & Evo- 2 phones 2 manufacturers. I know Moto doesn't make phones for Sprint- but it still seems odd that either HTC doesn't offer a keyboard Android device- or Samsung doesn't offer a keyboardless one (the Moment and Intercept both have keyboards in addition to Epic- so NO keyboardless android from Samsung on Sprint at all!)

While I do feel the "bulk" comment is kinda funny as I know about 5 droid 1 owners that had no problem buying a phone with a keyboard that have NO interest in ever using the keyboard...

I'm also surprised no one does further research in MODULAR keyboards that affix to the phone (yes it's possible) thus you can provide 1 SKU w/ an add on to have the same phone appeal to 2 audiences.

It's not the Droid Fascinate, it's the Samsung Fascinate. It's a loner :(

This right here. VZW is so far up moto's you know what that they prefer having one brand cover both market segments.
