Anyone pick one up today? Was just wondering what your initial impressions are so far and how it compares to the reviews.

I'm stopping by the Sprint store later myself to hopefully test drive one if it's available.

I picked one up. Ill post my thoughts once I have a chance to really use the device. So far I like it. Its seems a little big and the keyboard takes some getting use to but the screen is great and it seems pretty quick.

Just got home with mine (3 hours ago). Love it, Love it, did I mention I love it?

Sprint (love it also) was nice enough to allow me to trade in my really awful HTC Touch Pro. Hardware wise this phone is really solid; keyboard slides in and out with little to no effort and none of the clunkiness on the HTC TP. Screen is very bright and the icons and text are incredibly clear, unlike tweaking Microsoft's silly clear type. There is a nice rubbery feel to the backside and it even has a nice notch to help with removing for access to the battery and storage card (comes with a 2GB). Compared to the HTC TP, this is about the same size, at least feel wise, because the first thing I had to do with the HTC TP was buy a larger (capacity and size wise) battery. The Moment actually feels better in my hand than the HTC TP even with its extended battery - I have medium sized hands.

Fast, fast, fast. Apps and screens come and go with just a flick, however I did have to double tap the capacitive buttons a several occasions to get some love. Still need to figure out Android so I can customize each screen (3 total) and add more screens. Or are they desktops? Still not clear on all the terminology :(

Immediately I need to figure out how to get the battery display a percentage instead of a static icon, need the date AND time on the screen - by default the date only shows briefly when I press and hold the bar at the top of the screen - seems stupid not to have the date displayed by default, especially when so much screen real estate is available. There is even a Calendar Widget, but when placed, it only shows upcoming appointments. Again, stupid. Most importantly I need to figure out how to sync my Outlook contacts and calendar to this phone. This will be a busy day!

Went to Sprint and they didn't have it yet. Lame.

So i went to bestbuy and they had a dummy phone on display. I thought it was pretty nice. It wasn't that much bigger than my Hero, nor was it bulky which was what my fear would be considering it was a slider. I certainly left with a bit of envy. Now I'm just waiting to try a functional model.

Samsung Moment

I swung by Best Buy yesterday and picked it up. Here are my inital impressions after playing with it all day yesterday:

Hardware: Solid. Feels solid. It is heavy but I kind of like that. The keyboard will take some getting used to coming from a HTC Touch Pro but I like it nonetheless. I like how it has a dedicated search button. Screen is AH-maze-ing. All I gotta say. It's fast...fast...fast. Some people may not prefer a vanilla OS but I prefer it that way. It works a lot better and you can customize how you want it.

Software: Like I was saying above, I like the vanilla OS. Coming from an HTC Touch Pro, it's like a breathe of fresh air. I'm over the whole looks nice but works like crap thing. Which is what I think the Hero is. It may look cool but I'm looking for functionality when it comes down to it. The sense UI just bogs down the phone which has a slow processor. Most of the time people just disable it anyways. The onscreen keyboard is frustrating but usable. This is THE main reason why I went with the Moment instead of the Hero. The word prediction and auto completion is a nice feature. This feature on the Touch Pro was unusable. It bogged down the phone and made it lag something fierce.

Battery life is leaps and bounds better than the HTC Touch pro. Which may not be saying much since the battery life on the HTC devices are horrible in general, regardless of what phone. Just for reference. I have been streaming live radio on my phone since 7am this morning. Have done some light surfing and texting. It is now 9am and I still have about 3/4 battery left. I can't explain how stoked I am about that... I streamed live radio on the TP and it wouldn't last 2 hours and you could cook eggs on that thing.

It may seem like I'm bashing on HTC because I am. I don't think I'll ever buy another HTC phone. The build quality was terrible on the TP. I went through 3 of them things. The keyboard stopped working on the first 2. I take really good care of my phones and don't ever drop them so I know it wasn't me. It seemed like a lot of people had defective hardware. Where is the quality control!? I feel like HTC is spread way to thin and are releasing sooooo many phones, they don't really put in the time or effort to make a really solid product, but that's just my humble opinion. Take it for what it's worth.

Anyways, I loooooooooooooove the moment. I couldn't be happier. I honestly don't care if Sprint doesn't release an update to donut or 2.0 because the phone works so well now. I will probably update if they do come out but it's not like I'm scouring the internet waiting for any kind of firmware update like I was with the TP.

I need to figure out how to sync my Outlook contacts and calendar to this phone. This will be a busy day!

Here is what I did, cause I was using outlook to sync my contacts and calendar.

I exported my calendar as a common separated value and imported it into google calendar. I did the same thing for my contacts as well. But beware with the contacts.

If you set your phone to sync all contacts, it will sync any and every single email address you've ever sent or received in gmail, which is a pain.

If you go into gmail > contacts

In that window you should see "My Contacts." Make sure you import you outlook contacts under My contacts.

Then go on your phone and go to: Contacts > Menu > Edit Sync groups
Make sure you uncheck sync all contacts and then check My Contacts

And then:

Menu on homescreen > settings > Data Synchronization > Contacts

This should now sync only your outlook contacts.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the suggestion. Instead I got a little program called gSyncit, and now every time I open Outlook (there are other preferences) it calls to my gMail account and syncs everything automagically! A few seconds later my phone is updated - nice :)

Downloaded some apps from the Marketplace, so all those concerns I had yesterday about customizing the desktop have been resolved with either widgets or shortcuts.

The only remaining issue, or need, is a good encrypted wallet for all my credit card and bank account info. I used SPB Wallet on Windows Mobile but for the life of me cannot find a similar program for Android.

SplashData has released a version of SplashID for Android. I'm running it on my Hero and it's OK. It's not up to the same standards as the SplashID versions for other OSes, but it does the job pretty well.

Yeah, I actually ran across that, but checking their forums there was a boatload of disgust this thing would not sync at all. Kinda leery about dropping 30 bucks only to realize it may not work. Did you have any issues syncing your device to your computer?

I've had the samsung moment since the 1st and really like it. This is my first android device and I switched over from a tour and had an iphone before that. All in all i like the moment and android. Looking forward to the 2.0 update and the future of the android platform.

On a side note, just as many of you are experiencing i to have had inconsistency with my battery and/or the battery displaying a false reading.

I really like it so far. I just moved from a bb curve. I have had it 2 days now. I have used Palms, windows mobile devices, everything out there. This phone is really great. Great battery life I think. WIFI is great to have when I am in the house, email setup was not quite as easy as on the BB but really close to it on some accounts. I got all my accounts working, yahoo, msn, work email Groupwise. If you have exchange at work it is very easy. Multiple calendars is really cool. It seems very easy to figure out like the blackberry/Palm, the apps are very cool and tons of free ones that seem to work just fine. Had a few that don't work but not many. Tons of fun stuff for kids and adults if you entertain your child with your phone. Apps download fast, install really fast, just super easy.

1. The only thing I am having trouble with right now is deleting email, I can't find where you can delete a bunch at once. The only way I can get them out of my trash is to open them, hit the menu button and then select delete. I don't set my accounts up to totally control my mail though, I like just being able to get them but I still go online and manage them just to make sure nothing gets deleted and I like to still have them look un-read when I get into the actual account so I don't read it on the phone and forget.

2. The bluetooth doesn't activate the speak function to call people but not a big deal to me. Still works over the speaker if I really want to use it.

Just a couple comments from a former HTC Hero (sprint) owner who just traded in for the Moment:

1) I don't miss the shiny widgets that HTC Hero had built in. In my short experience with the Hero, the Sense UI crashed and had some further errors which led me to 2 hard resets in as many days. No thank you.
2) Moment's screen is very nice, snappy navigation.
3) Moment's email client (not the exchange server option) is not appealing at all. (compared the Hero)
4) Missing Google Voice search option (on the Hero) is disappointing.
5) It is a brick, no doubt.
6) Connecting the Moment to your PC thru Samsung's PC Studio product is frustrating. (has not recognized my phone yet)

Overall, with its shortcomings, I really like the new phone w/physical keyboard. Bring on the OS updates!

You think the Hero is all looks but works like crap? Have you actually used the Hero? I'm going on almost 4 weeks with it and haven't noticed any lag or slowness due to SenseUI. It doesn't have a slow processor, it has a 528MHz which is faster than a lot of smartphones out there. You can definitely tell the Moment is snappier, and it should be with a 800MHz proc. The Hero has word prediction and auto completion just like the Moment, and it works every bit as well. I actually use the on screen keyboard on the Moment because I can type much faster than using the hardware keyboard.

Really, every HTC device has horrible battery life? Have you used every HTC device for an extended period to confirm this? I agree that the Moment has better battery life but the Hero was far from being horrible.

You're comparing this brand new phone to a device that was released in October of 2008, more than a year ago, and you're making this one phone a reflection of HTC's entire company. Its called progress. Every device manufacturer goes through it. Try comparing it to some recent HTC devices like the Eris, Hero, Touch Pro 2, HD2, and the Pure. They're some of the most elegant, well build devices available. Just read Gizmodo's review of the HD2. They're in love with its design and it takes a lot just get those guys to notice anything without an Apple logo.
