Any really good and stable ROMs?

I'm not entirely new to android, but new to rooting or custom ROMs. I pulled the trigger on a N5 and it's sitting at my house ready to be played with. No pun intended there. Are there any really good and stable ROMs out there already?

1st of all, probably not. Give the devs some time to work...I'm sure there are ROMs out there, but given that the phone has only been available for a few days, we're probably talking about alpha/beta builds right now, and not necessarily stable daily drivers. It won't take long, have patience. The good news is that since you have a Nexus, you already have a lean, mean, Android 4.4 machine...so trust me, anyone who owns just about any other device would probably love to be running what you already got.

Even if there aren't too many ROMs out there, my advice would be to go ahead and get your bootloader unlocked, custom recovery installed, and device rooted...if you haven't already done so. The bootloader often usually requires a device wipe anyway (I don't own a N5, so I'm not sure about that), but even if not, may as well get that out of the way before you take too much time getting your device setup the way you want it.

There are some toolkits out there to help with this process, but I highly advise doing it yourself...it's really not that difficult nor complicated with a Nexus device anyway.

Once you done this, you'll be all set to install ROMs anytime you want...or even if you don't install any ROMs and decide to stay stock (which really isn't that bad on Nexus devices), there are still a lot of advantages to being rooted.

There are a couple. At this point the n5 is still in its infancy.
The n4 is very mature hence there are boatloads of really customized roms. The big guns like cyanogen, aokp, pa etc have fully-featured very mature roms. (at the moment all are working on 4.4 stuff, so there is a lull for the n4).
In that regard, it's kind of a bummer starting all over and have to wait for the device to mature. Then again it'll be fun watching the device grow.

Re: ROMs

One dude on xda built one from ASOP source. I haven't tried it, but I'm interested as I've disabled several Google apps as it is, and I'm looking to get closer to "pure".

Re: ROMs

I usually ROM at the first available opportunity but with the Nexus 5 I am liking it as it is. Giving the beta of Nova Launcher a whirl to see if that makes it even better but so far no real urge to change much...well except Hangout as the main SMS app - too slow and clunky right now but it does look mighty fine.
