It's not actually me, seriously, but I've been asked to help out. My friend has an Android phone and tried to get into his Gmail account on his computer. Of course he doesn't remember his password and the backup email address he gave no longer exists.

He IS still logged into his phone and can access his gmail. Any advice on how to either pull the PW out of his phone or get online and reset his PW/Assign a new backup id.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Try this:
I forgot my password - Gmail Help

Don't expect an easy time of it. Imagine instead of your friend who lost his password this is your phone and someone stole it, if all he's got is a phone that happens to have access to a Gmail account I would want Google to make it pretty darn hard to get even more control over my account.

Request password from can't remember password link on gmail web page.

If he had logged in to his email via his pc he with google chrome he can see the used password in this chrome://settings/passwords

(copy past on the search bar, NOT on google)

Or what if you can access that phone because of your job and you need info you have storage in the cloud of (that) gmail, and just see the password?
