Anybody ever use motion photos? I don't get the point.

I read about the technology and processing that goes into creating these clips but I just don't know what to do with it once I have it.

I dunno.. Taps into the Vine crowd I guess. I personally don't see the point, but since marketing weenies must have decided that someone wants them.

I see in my file manager that I have a dozen or so files with names in MVING_date format. That must be the moving pictures that I took when I first got the phone before I turned the "feature" off. Any way to convert these to IMG files to still photos with the IMG name format?

I don't think there is any converting that needs to be done. I left the feature on because I think it's kind of neat, but when I send pictures to computers or other people, they're still photos.

I think it only works within the Google photos app. That's been my experience at least.

I love them... They're awesome.

Especially if you have kids... Who always seem to do something fun just after you take the shot.

And you can export them now as animated GIFs to share with friends and family.

Great feature, I use it all the time. You can save pictures as videos to send via text message. Just a lot of fun.

I don't use them but I do get the point of them. They are supposed to capture a memory of what was happening at the time when you took the photo like something funny or something your child was doing etc that isn't as obvious with a still photo. That was the original design but with the explosion on popularity of GIFs now they've become an easy way to create those too.

Easy apple did it so Google has to, Google is pretty much doing what ever apple does with their phones. First it was the headphone jack next it will be a notch. Give it time by the pixel 4 the two phones will be different completely just like the IP+ vs the smaller one

They all copy each other. Apple was not first at getting rid of the jack. They were not first at water resistant phones. There were also not first at wireless charging.

I tried it out initially but after that never used. Same with live phones on the iPhone, used it when released and turned off after that and never really missed it. I guess it's useful in certain pics where you capture the moment along with the picture but honestly I never felt the need.

It's one of those things that's cute at times but not all that useful.

Makes for a nice demo I believe, especially on stage during product reveal and at point of sale for people not aware of the feature.

Most of my pictures are taken as motion. I also have an iPhone 6s and use the Live Photos as well. Google photos shows the live photos as motion in the app as well. I just like them as I take a lot of photos of my cats and get get some really funny shots when taken with motion
