Anyone else think these updates are leaked on purpose?

to gauge public perception? I mean.. Let's say Motorola released this into the wild and it had a ton of issues, people would be up in arms over it and mad at Motorola.. but because it was "leaked" they can take no responsibility for it because it's not official.

Who else thinks that these leaks, at least SOME of them, are from the manufacturers themselves rather than some angst engineer leaking them in defiance of their employer?

Could be true for sure. Why don't they just release public betas? The open source crowd will eat that up, the average consumer won't have a clue, and once they bugs are ironed out they can release the official build.

Seems way easier.

I admit the same thought crossed my mind, but in the end I really doubt it. As mentioned above it would be easier and more effective to just run a public test that you could plan to update with the final OTA. Instead, all of these leaks seem to fracture the user base and not be easily updated to the official one.

Its really the best way to perfect (somewhat) the OS before they release it to everyone. Think of the type of people who are loading this on their phone. They aren't phone owners, they are addicts! They will be the ones who will not only find but recognize flaws the designers missed. Then they get online and complain about it or even find a work around. This is very helpful for Motorola (for instance) so they can make minor tweaks prior to the official release. They do monitor these sites and in some cases designed them just to get this critical feedback. It helps you, it helps them, its good for everyone really. Well, except me because I'm still on this POS blankety blank blank blank BB storm!!!!!

Candidly speaking, that would be completely irresponsible of Moto if that were true. Besides, if they did orchestrate these leaks, it's highly unlikely they'll get objective, comprehensive and usable feedback, which begs the question, "What's in it for them?"

With the leaks, they don't involve the carrier or have to worry about any warranty, bricking, etc. issues. I'm guessing the carrier would probably have some say in this as well. In other words, the carrier doesn't want to have to deal with people installing beta versions of the OS (and the costs associated with this).

But, with the leaks, the manufacturer can still get some constructive feedback, albeit probably on a smaller scale.

RIM leaks OS updates all the time. Yes Addicts put them in their phones and give feedback on crackberry.com . I have been on crackberry for two years now and have seen this over and over for a variety of phones. I think it works for RIM. Don't see why it wouldn't work for other companies providing they have someplace to watch the feedback.

I doubt it. Why then would they try so hard to prevent you from rooting? As someone said earlier, from their point of view it leads to a fractured user base and more support problems for their carrier partners. But most importantly it would be a breach of contract with the carriers as it allows users to circumvent the carriers wishes to lock you out of features they want to charge you for - or make you upgrade to a new phone. (see vzw's official position that D1 phone doesn't support tethering - get customer to upgrade to a new phone). And Moto has actually/recently sent threatening letters to sites to take down the leaked roms. I think that speaks volumes as to their intentions.

With leaked bb roms the only think I was ever able to get over the stock was bug fixes. Never did it lead to being able to do things RIM/VZW didn't sanction as it clearly does on Android "leaked" (pirated) ROMs.
