Anyone provide step by step guide on VOIP

I have tried various things and havent got this to work. I may try the PBX route with setting it up on my PC however I am really looking for a solution that does not involve me running anything on a pc, or paying for a service. If I do have to pay for a service, I'd want it to be a minimal cost per call, not a monthly membership or anything (skype would work, but I couldnt get the beta to work for me over wifi).

I have tried google voice, it doesnt work for me for this application that I can figure out. I tried SIPDroid and Gizmo5. So if someone has a step by step guide which includes turning phone in airplane mode and then wifi on. This is just to make sure your doing it via wifi network and not phone network.

VoIP does not equal free. That's just a fact. You do have many options a quick google search will provide that to you. As far as a client that seems to work well, I'd give fring a try. Search for it in the market.

Once you have it installed you simply setup the sip tab with whatever you have chosen for a provider (provided info) and you're off. Quite straight forward.

If you're really really stuck. PM me and I'll set you up a test acct to play a bit. I've used fring successfully to make and receive VoIP calls from many locations. WiFi preferred of course.

This is how I get free VOIP calls on my Droid.

You'll need the following items:

1. GoogleVoice Account
2. Gizmo5 Account
3. GUAVA App

Step 1: Link/activate Your Gizmo5 and GV accounts. This means that you have to add your Gizmo5 generated SIP numbers to GV. Make sure your Gizmo5 number is checked as one of the number to ring once your GV # is called.

Step 2: Download/install Guava and enter your GV/Gizmo5 login credentials.

Step 3: In Guava you can select whether your call is conducted over 3G, WiFi or both.

Step 4: From your phone browser go navigate to the GoogleVoice website and initiate a call. Make sure that your Gizmo5 number is selected to ring.

Step 5: Once your phone rings answer it and congrats you are on a free VOIP call.

Whats is happening: Gizmo5 allows for free incoming calls. Since you initialed the call from GV it calls your Gizmo5 number and then Gizmo5 routes your call over Wifi or 3G.

Bad thing though, Gizmo5 is no longer accepting new registrations. We need to find another option now. Those new to this, like myself, and probably the OP need to find another acceptable provider.

I bet a shiny nickel that those "loopholes" will be closed up in short order. Even Free world dialup stopped taking open registrations at this point.

I personally see VoIP as a cheap alternative but unless its ip to ip device free will not likely remain anywhere for very long.

VoIP will soon invade other networks in telecommunication. It is cheaper than regular phones and besides you bring it at any location. Even if your are traveling you can still accommodate your calls as long as there is an internet connection.

guys, I am using sipgate one as a replacement to gizmo. they offer a free number. just go through the sipgate.com website and choose the sipgate one option

I'm using Sipgate also, tried gizmo5 (purchased on ebay for about $10), couldn't verify g5 number. So I wasted $10?

This works inbound and outbound on wifi.

Sipgate 1 account
(on computer)
sipdroid on android phone (on market)
Google Voice number
GV Callback (on market)
GV Dialer (on market)

Configure google voice to call sipgate number
configure sipdroid using the info provided from sipgate 1 account.

I had lots of trials and error until I finally got it to work. Call quality is great on my home network. Public networks have more signal loss, and not as good quality. I'm guessing it's due to traffic.
