Not sure if I'm not holding my phone in the right place when I try to use it, but can't seem to get it working.
Any suggestions?

Every damn day! On most "swipe" terminals you should be able to get it to work by just placing the phone on top but if that doesn't do it try holding the phone sideways and flat to the slider (tapping the side of the slider holding your oh one as if it were a card, if that makes sense). Also make sure you don't have a case that might interfere with the transmitter (which is pretty much around the center of the phone).

If you can't get it to work still, here are some troubleshooting options:
1) Make sure Samsung Pay is set as default (or to use the currently open app) in the Tap to Pay settings on your phone.
2)Uninstall / Reinstall Samsung Pay.
3) Do you have issues with wireless charging? If so that might mean you have damaged hardware and will need to repair/replace the phone.

I do have a case on my phone, but fingerprint scanner is clear.
So I should be holding it in one place?

If the case is too thick or metallic it might interfere with the signal. The transmitter is not in the Fingerprint Scanner. It's in between the Samsung and the S8 logos on the back of your phone. Try it without a case and if it works, well, then you know the case you use is interfering.

Thanks , I didn't know that. 😜
I'll try it with and without case to see if I can get it to work.
When I first got it, I mamaged to get it to work a couple of times. Then for some reason haven't gotten it to work since. so most times don't try. 😃
Thanks

Sometimes it's also operator error... Some terminals need the cashier to start 'reading' the transaction, and since some cashiers won't do this until they see a card (they probably don't know about the phone thing or won't do it unless you ask) that might cause issues.

Definitely an issue if the reader is mounted on their monitors and you try to reach in to their side of the counter to pay haha.

mine seems to have an issue as a debit transaction so i have to cancel/choose credit since it defaults to debit because its my bank card

I have an Otterbox Defender case on my S8 and it works fine, except for a few retailers that have very old card readers. Although I usually use it with my Gear 3 watch.

At Walmart I usually use self checkout.
I'm trying to set is as default, but don't see where to do that. Went to apps and it shows not default, but don't see where to set it.

.

that's how it is at Starbucks. I thought i was just extra slow and didn't know how to use it, but they had to do something on their end.

Just search for 'Tap and Pay' in your Settings or long-press the NFC toggle in your notification bar, that should take you to the NFC settings and Tap and Pay is there.

one other note what kind of security do you have? mine work first couple times with a pin, after that nothing until I read somewhere to use better security biometric etc. I setup fingerprint security works every time now.

My Samsung pay stopped working about 3 weeks ago and Samsung has been unable to fix it

I had a problem with Samsung pay about a month ago, I could initiate it but it would not accept a fingerprint or the pin. I had to clear the cache and then it worked fine.

I've been using it on a new to me S8 and it's been working fine thus far. To be fair, I've only used it at 2 places though.
