anyway to keep from having to unlock 3 different ways?

Just made the switch from the BB storm to the HTC Desire and have some newbie questions...

1) how do I _not_ have to unlock the phone 3 times before I can use it?
- currently I hit the power button to turn the screen on, then swipe down, then use the pattern unlock.

If I could get rid of the swipe down part, that would be ok.



2) do I need a screen protector on this thing? The storm was a glass screen, so pretty much impossible to scratch.


any other advice??


I'm sure some searching will answer my other questions, but for anyone with time on their hands:
1) what's a good todo app?
2) what's a good memo/note app? (ideally with a way to backup my info - online or other)
3) ebook reader that will read the PRC files I made with mobipocket
4) good newsreader (like viigo)

You can turn the lock pattern off in the security settings. I have read about an app called No Lock that others have said works well...
