AOD issues - no stock text showing up

I love my Note, but have had a few quirks come up. The first was that the NFC icon disappeared from the drop down option (it's not on the button grid/order any more), but I don't use NFC that much and am dealing with it. Now my text (stock) messages are no longer showing up on the AOD, when they did before. Looks like lots of others have had this problem, here and on other forums, but even though I didn't change anything, and I've tried all of the suggestions, nothing changes. I am not using the calendar view and I can see the time, date, my contact info, and the battery percentage. Other icons show up, but not texts. What gives?

Did you go into AOD app and clear cache, also check for updates?

I did clear all of the storage in AOD. I haven't yet downloaded the most recent version of Android (I have to wait for my employer to clear it). Hopefully that will solve it, but I suspect it is something else given the problems others have had.
