Try turning off auto refresh entirely (open the app, press menu, go to settings, and select the top option for never), then do the same for scrolling. You should be able to remove the app from your homescreen with no trouble, but the auto scrolling needs to be off too.

I got much better battery life today after placing AP back onto a homepage. I had it set to never scroll and to on.y refresh every 3 hours. I do like the widget and want to keep using it so I'll probably leave it there this week and see how my battery life goes.
