You can check with the Play Store app on the watch or check via Play Store on the phone

It was a valid question. Keep in mind there are some watchfaces which also use an app installed on your phone, so those would require an update from the Play Store on your phone. Usually, it's for a premium/licensed version and or when the watchface has widgets for the phone.

That is odd to me that you need a companion app for single watchfaces.. I've only ever used Tizen though. I'll get used to it!

Most of them don't, but the ones that do often provide info in the form of widgets on your phone. The only Tizen watchfaces I had that required a phone app were the very few that sent phone battery info to the watchface. On Wear OS, you get that without the need for a separate app.
