Apple granted "mother of all smartphone software patents"

Just read this on phandroid too. Scary that this patent is even allowed. I've been getting mail and messages on a touch screen phone since my palm 600. At some point, you have to wonder why the patent office itself isn't sued for granting these idiotic patents.

this is what the patent says

Portable electronic device, method, and graphical user interface for displaying electronic lists and documents

Abstract
In a computer-implemented method, a portion of an electronic document is displayed on the touch screen display. The displayed portion of the electronic document has a vertical position in the electronic document. An object is detected on or near the displayed portion of the electronic document. In response to detecting the object on or near the displayed portion of the electronic document, a vertical bar is displayed on top of the displayed portion of the electronic document. The vertical bar has a vertical position on top of the displayed portion of the electronic document that corresponds to the vertical position in the electronic document of the displayed portion of the electronic document. After a predetermined condition is met, display of the vertical bar is ceased. The vertical bar is displayed for a predetermined time period when the portion of the electronic document is initially displayed.

looks like it is for only displaying lists and documents. not the touch screen itself. i dont think android has a bar that shows up in a list or in document lists

i think some people may be overeacting

Maybe ford motor company needs to file suits against all other car manufacturers. They did make the first car, right And everyone else designed there own after that..... this is ridiculous apple.

Exactly - if your car is not a Ford and uses a steering wheel and pedals for brakes and acceleration, then it's in violation of Ford's Look & Feel and User Experience...

And of the patent was applied for this year, then there is plenty of prior art to invalidate it.

Ford was not the first auto. They were the first mass produced auto. Actually they invented the assembly line. The 1885 Benz motorwagen was the first car to have an internal combustion engine. There was even cars back in the 1700's that were steam powered.

OK, so Benz should take all the other automakers to court...... right? Again, apple this is ridiculous. Thy make a great product . My wife does not have the patience to learn how to use my android, she uses an iPhone. It is easy to use, but for myself doesn't offer enough options and customizations

There is enough prior examples to revoke this patent. I do not understand why Apple was allowed to have many of the patents it was granted. This is yet another stall tactic and act of desperation by Apple.

So if this holds up, then can Google make Apple remove all the features Apple copied from Android? This is a pandora's box that needs to stop now.

In the end, I expect Apple to get slapped like Microsoft. I am all for free markets, but this crap is not the free market when a company wants to use the law to hinder and/or stop competition.

Steve Jobs foolish war on Android will end up costing Apple far more than market share. They should be spending this money and time of R&D and trying to make happy consumers.

Apple is trying to be a monopoly we need to bring this to the gov we don't need monopoly's

That sounds like the long-press pop up bar that apple uses for the copy/paste menu. If it is, android doesn't use it anywhere.

I am forced to use Apple in a business. Reason is I believe is that every Apple phone is the same. So everyone is on same level with actions that can be done, etc.
I find the phone clumsy a bit compared to my HInc. I also find connection to non apple devices hard(except now for the icloud for Windows) . Apple may be changing internally now so the company doesn't make same mistake they did in past by not licensing their soft and hardware so deversity can be had like the Android market. If not they will wither. Open source rules.

Heh. Hilarious in so many ways. Apple is destroying the Android market in profits, apps, service and support. It's not even close. All the Android manufacturers are losing money except Samsung who won't report sales only shipped numbers.
But according to you, if Apple doesn't license, which lost them money and quality when they did do it, somehow they are going to be in trouble. Uh huh.
Open source rules how? If Android is open source its the most closed open source project in history. Go look up the standard definitions of open source and see how many apply to Android. Open Source alone doesn't rule anything and certainly doesn't mean quality or time to market. I have a long history with Open Source, iOS, and Android btw.
I don't know what you mean by "connection to non-apple devices" but then its clear you don't either.
Show me a device and I'll show you how to connect an iOS device to it. Very easy. Or you can Google it.

So when does apple become a monopoly?? When will the supreme court realize that Apple is a monopoly and disband them

Its clear you have no idea why Microsoft was convicted as a company of multiple felonies and how unlike Apple is from Microsoft.
Apple makes far more revenue than Android.
Apple customers satisfaction is through the roof by every measure.
Google arrogantly ignored many companies patents and copy rights when they bought Android and slapped it together from what they bought. This is why Microsoft makes $3 to $6 per Android device sold and why Apple and Oracle are also suing them.
Google sues other companies over patents.
Every Android manufacturer has as well, Samsung, HTC, Motorola to name a few. But because you have an Android phone you want to rant against Apple about things you don't understand.

You did hear that oracle lost their suit against Google, right. Also apple isn't suing Google, just manufactures that make android devices. And again Google do sent pay Microsoft, HTC, samsung, Motorola and others pay them. Which brings the biggest problem, apple won't license anything. They don't want competition, even though they could make hundreds of millions of dollars extra a year.

Exactly - if they made 5$/device sold from licensing...with Androids selling more than 1M units/day that's in the BILLIONS per year!
But since Apple doesn't need the money they rather prevent others from making any.

I know. At 1ml devices a day that's 365 million a year. Even at $1 per device that's $365 million a year for NO EXTRA work. Easy money, because apple die hards will still pay for apple products. They don't mind paying $650-799 for a phone that costs apple $213.

Edit: it only costs Apple $188 per iPhone 4s 16GB, and about $263 for a 64GB. That is according to this article.

That only covers the hardware. R&D, shipping, marketing, etc. are not factored in.

And besides the $350 Google Galaxy Nexus, all other phones are priced similarly to the iPhone.
