Apps do not close after hitting home button

[Android Central Question]

I just bought an Essential phone. When I open contacts for example, search for someone go into his profile, call for example and then hit the home button, then later reopen the contacts app I will still end up in his profile instead of being at the start screen of the contacts app. Obviously that is annoying as I have to hit back a couple of times. Same holds true for all other apps, with contacts it is most annoying though.
New to android, so help is greatly appreciated

Tap Back to close an app, not Home. Tap Recents to set it aside if you want to come back to it later.

if I hit the back button I just reverse the steps taken in that app, it does not close at all. what am I missing?

You can also tap Recents and close apps held there by swiping them away or tapping the X on each.

right, thank you. So but I have to actively close it(2 steps), on my colleagues android( older version) and my recent windows phone "contacts"always starts fresh after moving away from it, which personally I find more convenient
