am I imagining things but have app developers quit using the play store to update in spite of the settings? It seems just about every time I start some app, it says it needs updating. It even has happened when making mobile payments at some stores (Walmart pay and Kroger pay). Have to stand there twiddling my thumbs, waiting for the app to update so I can finish checking out.

I think it's because the Play Store doesn't always give a notification immediately when an app update is available -- there might be a little delay. If you go to the Play Store and manually refresh the Updates list in the Manage Apps section, the updates will usually show up then.

But a specific app itself may still let you know an update is available before the Play Store has gotten a chance to notify you.

I sometimes check manually, but it typically already updated. For example, I checked today and saw all my apps were up to date.

It happens when device feature 'auto-update' is disabled. Turn on auto-update to enable devices to update apps when any update is available., to do that:
Open the Google Play Store app .
At top right, tap the profile icon.
Tap Settings Network Preferences. Auto-update apps.
Select an option: Over any network to update apps using either Wi-Fi or mobile data. Over Wi-Fi only to update apps only when connected to Wi-Fi.

Thanks, but I'm pretty sure the OP was referring to those settings when they mentioned "in spite of the settings."
