Are folks generally happy with rooting the Motorola Droid?

Howdy,

I was seriously considering rooting my Droid and then putting Cyanogen on it. However, I see a fair number of posts here and on other sites complaining about issues with texting, data connection, and Exchange servers. The data connection going flaky is supposedly common to a lot of mods, not just Cyanogen, and requires switching in & out of Airplane Mode to get it going again.

The problem is that I have no sense of the statistics here. For all I know, there are 10,000 Droid owners out there with hacked phones, and I'm seeing the complaints from the 1% who are having problems.

Does anyone have a good sense of how reliable it is to switch in a stable release of Cyanogen?

Thanks,
SRV

Forums sites are never useful for determining statistics like this. Think about it. Most people that post are posting because they need assistance, not because everything's working and there are no problems. You just have to try and see for yourself. I haven't had any problems rooting or running CM7. YMMV and this is always the case with ROM's and kernels. That's why you always need to make sure you have a good backup to revert to.

Cyanogen probably is on close to 500,000 different phones. They were talking about it on the podcast last night. I haven't seen 50 people with significant problems that ditch Cyanogen.

The cool thing about the original Droid is that there are so many ROMs and it's so easy to flash, you wouldn't have any problem trying multiple ROMs to find the least buggy for you. You also wouldn't have a problem quickly returning to your stock backup.

If you're comfortable with the process and what's involved, go for it. If Cyanogen doesn't work for you, try Project Elite or Peter Alfonso's Vanilla build. There are a bunch of Droid ROMs with established performance, surely one of them will make you happy.

I've used Cyanogen nightlies for quite some time now on my Droid and I'm happy as a clam.

The thing with CM7 (and other Gingerbread ROMs) is that gingerbread wasn't made to run on these phones. So the amount of memory available gets low and thus the android system begins closing things off, and texting (sms) gets cut. I would recommended rooting and installing a froyo ROM.
You'll get little to no issues lol

That's exactly my point - that browsing forums like this gives a biased view because you get the folks with problems. I just wanted to see some informal responses from people who are *not* having problems. Sounds like you're one of them - thanks.

Ah - thanks. That's good to know.

Memory use depends on the user. I don't run a lot of busy widgets and I don't run a lot of busy apps, so my memory use is fine and have no problems with CM7. If you find you have problems, you can always run CM6.1.2 and it was very stable and ran just fine as well.

I just rooted and installed CM6.1.2 to start off with something straightforward. Easy to install, and seems fine so far. Thanks for the tip.

If you want a stable ROM I suggest a Froyo ROM, every GB ROM I have tried has had bugs because they are still being developed.

Thanks. The Froyo ROM I'm using this week (CM 6.2.1) does seem pretty stable.

I resisted rooting and custom roms until last weekend, but I was getting so frustrated with my Droid that I was ready to buy a new phone at full retail to replace it.

I'm glad I waiting on that. I decided to try rooting to the latest 7.0.3 stable build of Cyanogen Mod and I feel like I have an entirely new phone. Now I wonder why on earth I waited so long,

My phone is running faster that it did on stock Froyo build. So far I have not found any problems in my usual workflows.

Your mileage may vary.

I personally am running Froyo since I run a lot of widgets/apps. So I need more available memory. It all depends on your preferences. Plus, Netflix now works on Froyo so no need to run GB for me :D

I am mad that I waited so long to root and ROM...I waited until my warranty was up. Since then I've used Petes GPA15 GB Build and couldn't stand it, I only used it for a day...I don't think I will ever have a stock ROM again!!!

Pete does good work.

I have enjoyed CM so much, that I will not be buying another device that won't see CM. Likely it will be an HTC on VZW or Sprint. Motorola hasn't turned the leaf yet, and I won't be buying from them until they do.

Same here. Moto is digging it's grave again. That EVO 3D is catching my eye ;)

I rooted a while back and have loaded probably 12 roms on my device always finding something a little better! Froyo is the way to go with the D1. Learn ow to fix your phone before you brick it so you know what to do. Its very easy!! Always remember to nandroid backup!

rooting and installing roms is fun for me - new features keep popping every few weeks, even on the OG droid...amazing

Im happy to know 97% of apps work on my phone i love froyo. I dont like gingerbread os to much.

Droid 3 will be my next phone or droid 2 global

I actually just switched to Sprint the Monday before launch. Played with an EVO 4G to get used to Sense, then picked up my EVO 3D at 8am that Friday. Talk about a beast of a phone. I like the Sensation better by virtue of that sexy battery door and the 3D doesn't mean that much to me, but the wife said no T-Mo.
