I love my EVO. But... I am now figuring out that HTC/Sprint are not making it easy to root the device. Seems like the EVO is one of those models that's just not really meant to be rooted and mod'ed VS other brand models.

I was thinking about rooting and installing CyanagenMod or some other really good ROM. I really would like Gingerbread, or a Froyo ROM without the Sprint application bloat and I want to try it without the sense UI. It should be stable and fast.

Am I asking too much? I have searched and looked into various forums and the consensus is that rooting the EVO is possible however not very functional, meaning no camera (I have the latest model purchased in December) or no 4G. or what I have read is that it's really slow on 3G.

I really wanted a fast ROM with all the Google goodness and other goodies on it keeping at least 3G and having be really fast on a fast phone.

There's a good deal of mis-information in your post. Any HTC Sense based ROM using the latest (3.7) software release will support your hardware and there are a ton of popular roms that use that.

There are now custom kernels that support this hardware as well.

Also of note, the Cyanogen 6.1.2 updates now supports your hardware. Check out the link above, it's root heaven for an Evo owner.

There are numerous full functioning ROMS available for the EVO. I am using Myn’s Release 4 and it is fully functional minus the bloat. Sense is still incorporated into Myn’s and overall the phone is very quick and smooth.

I’ve also used CyanogenMod 6 and it really brings out the speed of the EVO. There is no Sense installed and the camera, gallery etc are all AOSP. I’ve used several other ROMS and have never ever had a slowness of 3G or any other issues. If you want a fast ROM with all the Google goodness I would highly recommend CM6. The great thing about Root and ROMS is if you aren’t happy you can always flash back to the way you were or to another ROM.

thanks for the replies, I kinda figured that there was some misinformation in my post. I was reading so many different posts from varying forums it's easy to get lost when attempting to digest the information.

I am going to continue to read up and maybe i'll pull the trigger.

Reading first and rooting second is a great way to go about it. Your EVO is a complex device and there are a lot of great developers out there that have really streamlined the rooting process and the process of installing roms, but to actually know what is happening behind the scenes is invaluable, especially if you run in to a snag or want to try something or change something.

That being said there's a great support community in the dev forum and people get helped there on a daily basis.

Here is a web-site that will give you the break down on ROM's and Kernel's that are out there. Will also give you the link to each. This web-site is Awesome if you are interested in what ROM/Kernel you may want to use:

I use Vaelpak and I love it. Its fast and the battery is amazing. 4g works and camera works too.
