Aside from LTE variant, what can this do that my Nexus 4 can't do better?

Honest question.
I have $205 to Best Buy and would consider picking one up today, but I don't know if 2.3" of screen warrants the purchase or not.

I've got my Nexus 4 with wireless orb and a Chromecast dongle on the way and my computing is done via 2011 iMac and Apple TV for streaming (phasing out those two products, hence the Ccast).
Do I need a Nexus 7? Short answer, no... but what are the highlights of the device?

What do you do on your Nexus 7 that you don't do on your Nexus 4?

2.3 inches doesn't sound like much, but is actually a big difference in real life. Much more comfortable to read and Web browse on, not to mention movies and videos. It can't technically do anything the N4 can't, but when you are a little more stationary, the real estate is nice.

I have a Nexus 4 and a new Nexus 7. In the short amount of time that I've owned it, I can already tell that my Nexus 4 is going to be used a lot less. Reading (books, webpages, etc) and viewing videos is so much nicer on the 7. The screen seems a lot better too, which makes it even more enjoyable. It may seem like 2.3" isn't a lot bigger, but once you compare it in person there is a huge difference.

I have a GS3 and am wondering the same thing.. I don't care about the camera since the GS3 has a good one and in this case the screen is barely 2" larger. I cannot read books on the GS3 though, but I CAN make calls and access LTE. And with so many of the first gen models for sale from people that rarely used them, it really makes you wonder just how much value there is in owning one

I have a Nexus 4,7 and 10. I wouldn't have bought the 7 but I received it as a gift (pretty good gift at that). If you plan to read google books or anything of that nature the 7 is perfect size. If you don't plan to use it as an ereader it is nice to to have a larger screen but honestly I would prefer a 10 inch tablet as many of the tasks one would want to use on a tablet are not appreciably better on the 7 than using an Nexus 4. I don't find web browsing to be any better on the Nexus 7 than on my Nexus 4 and I usually use the Nexus 10 for that. My Nexus 7 mainly gets used as an e-reader, and alarm clock (with dock).


It really just comes down to how you use it.

Thanks, perhaps I'll wait for the refreshed N10. I tried to actually buy that one in the past but the Play Store was always sold out and so was Wal-Mart

While benchmarks are marking the N7 higher than the N4 it's probably not big enough to make it worth it, so the only thing would be screen size. But don't let the "just" 2.3" fool you, look at this comparison:

Visual TV Size Comparison : 4.7 inch 5x3 display vs 7.02 inch 16x10 display

We're talking 50% larger diagonal area and 130% larger area overall. That's a lot if you ask me, however it depends if that's worth it to you. Of course the Nexus 10 will make an even bigger difference.

Having a tablet is a nice thing, even when you have a great phone. I got a bluetooth keyboard and mouse for mine and its become a great portable terminal when I want to do heavy lifting and a super Office clone - Photoshop Touch dohicky when I don't need tons of horsepower.

The CPU is much faster in this new nexus 7 than the nexus 4. (its really a snapdragon 600, and uses ddr3 vs ddr2) The screen colors, contrast, and view angles are also much much better. No amount of calibration on the nexus 4 will change this fact. This is the first nexus LCD display that I would consider class leading in this respect. The old nexus 7, nexus 10, and nexus 4 all had the off angle glow and washout.

prolonged use of a 4.7" screen to watch videos and web browsing makes my vision literally blurry from eye strain. I need 7" and above for anything longer than 5-10 minutes so I don't have a choice unless I want a mega phablet for my phone and not get a tablet at all.
