Ask Jerry: What do I need to know about buying a used phone? : Read more
Thanks for sharing your info by writing such an interesting article regarding phones at US borders, Jerry!
On a semi-unrelated note

, with re to encryption, just out of curiosity, do you happen to know how gov agencies, from fed's down to state & local municipal police forces, are able to routinely retrieve deleted data & images off of either handed-over or seized phones... seemingly so regularly and easily?
I ask, because if you happen to be a True Crime podcast listener

. . (of which I've somehow become semi addicted to being

.... for example):
Who killed Tom Wales? Get all the latest episodes of this true crime podcast reinvestigating the assassination of Assistant United States Attorney, Tom Wales. Wales was murdered in Seattle in 2001, but the case remains unsolved after 16 years. The FBI has a $1 Million Dollar reward in the case.

. . or . .
. . you'll be aware that the gov fed's & state & local municipal police forces, apparently, are nearly always able to recover just about anything—from any phone—that's ever been deleted !

Again, according to police & gov officials routinely interviewed on True Crime podcasts.
Not that I'm planning on any capers, like
"The Golden Toilet Heist" - in the BBC Sounds 'Crime Next Door' podcast series!
