I have the HTC One on ATT, was rooted , bootloader unlocked, S-Off, with TWRP custom recovery. I converted to a full GPE then updated to 4.4. I had a very hard time getting the custom recovery back on and didn't get the superuser to work. This morning I finally somehow got TWRP on and working but still no root with superuser. The root checker app says the phone is not rooted . Any one give some insight and help on how to perm. root the 4.4 ?

Try flashing SuperSU. If not, check in the developer options to verify that you are allowing root access.

I have tried every superuser that I can find including SuperSU and looked in the Developer options and see no place to allow or disallow root access other than the normal debugging checks which are checked.

What root checker are you using? The last i knew it hasn't been updated . its looking for root in a way that isnt used anymore.
if you have superuser app in the app drawer and the su binaries in system/xbin then you are rooted

I have both the Chainfire Superuser and Super Su, I have tried to flash supersu from CWM and TWRP , it flashes or says it does, then it don't work or update when booted up. I have both super users in the app drawer downloaded from google play, but they wont install. I have tried using the app Quick boot, but it wont do anything. Super User says its granted permission to various apps but nothing is showing or working, anytime I open and use Root Checker it says "this device does not have proper root access" and now I am at a loss as to how to get it. Before on 4.3 I just flashed TWRP and it asked to install the super user now it wont.

Go into supersu app and in settings and go to install supersu into/system and also try the Reinstall option
supersu should detect superuser ans ask if you want to uninstall it does it?
do you have file manager, if so can you look in system/xbin and see if you have su binary in there

Su says it needs to update binary at one point but wouldn't . Now the Super Su app says "there is no SU binary installed . and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem. I have tried some file managers to install the Su but it wont install. I flashed the app in recovery with TWRP its says it installed and rebooted , its not there. Using an app called App Opps 4.3/4.4 it says SuperSU is not installed . I tried to install the App Opps X and it says I need Root Access to install on this device. I have never had so much trouble with recoveries and super user apps before. I am about ready to go back to 4.3 or earlier . or the factory yet. I don't really see the fuss over the 4.4 yet myself.

I can't get into the app , any and every time I open it , it force closes . Frustrating. took me close to 24 hours to get a custom recovery on it after the 4.4 update.

Yeah, the SuperSU has to be the most up to date. Any version lower then v1.50 does not support any android version higher then android 4.2.2.
