assign notification sound

I am stupid and need help please. I'd like to assign different notification sounds to different apps. For example, a ding for incoming emails, and a knock for texts. I was able to set that for email but messages (Google) doesn't have an in-app setting. At least as far as I can see. Notifications/select app/in-app settings just loops back to the same menus.

Old phone could do this but can't seem to get this working here.

For messages don't click in app notifications. Click notification categories.

Also if you go to the 3 dot menu inside a conversation you can set notification sounds for that particular person. I have my most important people all with their own tones per person.
