Assuming default app

Is there any way to change the option on whether or not I would like an app to be that the default instead of it being automatically assumed? Previous phones I've had gave the option on whether or not I would like an app to be the default

Go to settings -> apps -> menu and should see the default apps. Once there, you can select to ask you before setting default apps.
