Asus Transformer vs Toshiba Thrive vs Phantom Amazon Tablet

Hey all,

I spent some time at Best Buy yesterday and looked at a bunch of tablets. They actually had the Asus Transformer which felt solid. They also had the Toshiba Thrive, which was heavy but nice to hold. I also played with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Samsung Rep seemed to know less than I did about it. It felt like I could snap it in half by accident. That mixed with no expandability via USB or SD, gets it off the list.

OK, here is my issue. After coming back I read up a little and love that the Asus has an IPS screen with Gorilla Glass, but the Toshiba has all those ports. The Asus is also cheaper. I would only get the 16GB version and add SD later (if I needed it). Battery life on both seem comparable. Which would everyone recommend?

Now, I am also a Kindle user, which I love. I am also an Amazon Prime member so along with my free 2-day shipping, I get free Amazon VOD. With Rumors of a 10.1 Kal El coming this summer would you skip on waiting for this Tablet? Would you hold?

Thanks for the tips all!

I love my transformer! The Toshiba seems heavy + more expensive. The TF also has the dock (which I got for fathers day, & love) which will give you your needed ports plus added functionality. Right now the amazon tablet is vaporware, besides, with tech, if you're always waiting for what's on the horizon, you'll never buy anything or will ALWAYS be buying something. Just buy what you like now. Hope this helped, happy shopping!

Of the currently available tablets, I'd take the Xoom because it consistently gets software upgrades first, and the most recent software revision brought SD card support.

If you're willing to wait a bit, I'd check out the Amazon tablet (for value) and the HTC 10.1" tablet (for features). Both should be out soon.

Not having read much about the expected Amazon Tablet yet. Is the Amazon Tablet something that is being built to compete with the Nook Color or something being built to compete as a true tablet?

I don't think anyone knows what the full purpose of the Amazon Tablet is at this point. I would have to think it would be a media consumption device like the iPad. That just seems logical to me given all of the media services Amazon has. I could be wrong though.

I had high hopes for the Amazon tablet, but having read the rumored specs, which include no camera, I am less than impressed. Have a Nook Color, which excels as an e-reader, not so much as a tablet, and am researching tablets currently. The Lenovo Ideapad that just emerged looks intriguing but I would like to see one in person before purchase.

I'd say only get the Toshiba Thrive if the extras it has (full size sd card slot, full size hdmi, full size usb + mini usb) are what you really need for a tablet. I bought the Thrive specifically b/c I wanted the full size sd card reader for use with my Nikon DSLR. So I can quickly check and view the days pictures. The extra heft is noticable, but not a deal breaker for me. Otherwise, I'd go for the transformer.
