AT& Phonix & Gingerbread

I successfully loaded gingerbread on my Phoenix phone and was initially elated that one of the issues I previously had cleared up--the constant drain on the battery by the "send and receive." My phone would get hot and the battery get exhausted unless I went to settings>manage applications>gmail, and turn off the mail preloader.
How, after two days of gingerbread, I see the issue has returned. Since Saturday things were fine; today, te issue has returned.
Any insights?
