Converting from iPhone to Nexus One (AT&T model, using same SIM), the few times I've tried connecting to AT&T free Wifi I was not successful.

Am I missing something here?

Does this work for others?

Its not like I'm paying them any less now than before. I'm on month-to-month extension of my completed iPhone plan, so they are essentially pocketing that part of my payment that used to go to Apple. I would think the Wifi should still work. The only time I use it is while traveling anyway.

Where are you trying to logon to AT&T Wi-Fi.
I don't think that they have the AT&T Wi-Fi Autologin for the Nexus One like they do for the iPhone. AT&T doesn't give you a username & password for their Wi-Fi, do they?
I use my Nexus One to login to Starbucks Wi-Fi sometimes (from the full-page login screen), but I am using a username from the free Starbucks Card Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi at Starbucks will become more free soon: Starbucks To Offer Unlimited Free Wi-Fi At All U.S. Stores : NPR

They probably check your IME number so if you haven't registered your N1 with ATT (called and changed from iPhone to the new phone) it may not be registering as an ATT device even with the SIM card. Since they don't sell the phone, you need to do this.

But I did register it with AT&T.

(The At&T lady drooled all over the Nexus One. Very knowledgeable gal).
She recorded the IME number, and made one change in the computer to remove Visual Voice Mail number, (although the N1 was already directing to Google Voice.

Then maybe ask her about the wifi deal.

Yah I would call them or stop by a store. Not sure what the issue is.

Devices such as the iPhone and the BlackBerrys that AT&T sells which allow the free WiFi access are pre-programmed with the AT&T WiFi credentials needed to access the service. For example, an AT&T branded BlackBerry Bold 9000 can access it whereas an unlocked/unbranded one cannot even if it is using the exact same SIM and service.

Since the Nexus One is not officially sold through AT&T, it does not include the backend WiFi logon credentials.

But as a poster mentioned above, you could still get a free AT&T WiFi account using the Starbucks card method and then just log in to that using the browser.

With the data plan change I know that free wifi is now part of every data plan not just on specfic devices as it was before. I think before the change is was on some devices only.
Part of the press release.
Each plan includes unlimited access at no additional charge to more than 20,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots in the U.S. Customers can also use unlimited Wi-Fi at home, in the office or elsewhere if available. AT&T will also help customers manage their wireless data usage by sending free text messages when customers reach different usage intervals, and by providing online tools, including a smartphone app that shows monthly usage information.

This all sounds correct. So if it is the case that it is supposed to be included with your data plan, then it is just a matter of how you get it. Perhaps AT&T will give you a log-in for logging into AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots.

Yes, but only on the devices listed as being "compatible devices" on their page. And as long as those compatible devices are purchased AT&T branded. The device still needs to be preloaded with the backend credentials in order to access the WiFi service. But, as already pointed out, Starbucks will be changing their WiFi to free universal one-click access beginning on July 1st. So while yes, that doesn't apply to all AT&T WiFi hotspots, at least one of the major players is changing the policy.
