AT&T HTC ONE X: rattling volume keys ??

So, I just received AT&T HTC ONE X. I am extremely happy with the hardware and mostly happy with the software overall. The only annoying thing I notice is that the volume keys are loose and rattle when I move the phone in my hand. It is a very slight noise.

The noise really doesn't disturb me but I am concerned that this may get worse and the volume keys may stop functioning at some later point of time. Is this a reason enough to go and get an exchange?

Thanks,
Osho

Hey guys this shouldn't be the case. I had multiple other problems with my first HOX and returned it...wasn't that big a deal to me that they seemed rattley...but nonetheless when I returned the device for another HOX the new one was fine and had no such issue. If it is a problem on yours I suggest replacing it for a new one. They are not all that way.:)

I'm on my second One X. The first one had a "creak" in the polycarbonate shell and the screen seemed "mushy", by which I mean that even slight pressure would make the screen "sink" into the shell, but the volume rocker was solid.

The second one had a very solid shell and screen but had a "shaky" volume rocker. I feel that the issue with the polycarbonate shell and screen was a defect where the issue with the volume rocker is just a random side effect of having an uni-body design. So I feel that if the volume rocker is the only hardware issue I end up having then I can live with that. Also, I checked about a dozen display units across multiple AT&T stores (because I'm nuts like that :)) and noticed that half of them had a "loose" volume rocker but none of them had a "creaky shell" and "mushy screen". Just my thought, but if you feel like you can't live with the rattle then I would just suggest bringing it back. :)

Are you guys sure the rattling isn't the camera rather than the volume rocker?

positive. I actually can't hear the rattle from the camera, but if I hold my finger against the volume rocker, the rattle goes away.

My international one x volume buttons rattle a tad when shaken. However how often do we shake our devices? Non issue if you ask me.

If it rattles when the phone vibrates that could get irritating real quick.

Yes, I actually haven't heard it "rattle" since I don't use "shake" features nor do I use vibrate. I can visually move the volume rocker up and down about 1mm with my finger. Again, for me it's a non-issue.

I am aware that the rattle from the auto-focus module (or something like that) is normal.

I went to the local AT&T store to talk to someone about this issue. It seems this is "part of the phone's design". They had 2-3 models on display and all had the same loose volume rocker and the rattle.

It doesn't bother me much - as long as volume keys don't stop working just after the 1-year warranty period!

The vibrate on this thing is crazy! If your volume keys weren't loose, the vibrate might cause them to start rattling! haha

I actually like the strong vibrate on the phone though. I've had phones in the past with such wimpy vibration, this one's actually good.

I have actually read somewhere that some manufacturers design buttons and other things to be fitted "loose" as to not cause it to break from shock or vibration.

This is not normal for the keys to be loose or rattle. The first device I had did have the loose volume rockers... That's not why I took it back and I really couldn't have cared but they were loose... Not even just the rattling but they felt loose when you pushed them. The new unit that I got however they are firm and secure. For me it wasn't an issue or the reason I returned the first one.... If your ok with it I don't think it should cause any trouble down the road... If not then simply exchange it. For anyone on here to suggest that this is normal or designed this way that would be inaccurate as I have experienced both sides of the coin.

I might be wrong about the "loose by design" aspect but I just don't think all of them are a defect, maybe not intended but surly not a defect as you can google about it and it is rather a common side effect among many phones. As I mentioned earlier as well, at least half the phones I tested at retail locations did the same thing. I agree that if they were loose enough to the point it's just "floating" around then there probably is an issue but I do feel that almost all buttons will have some give at one point or another. Maybe check the buttons after a couple months of use and maybe there will be a little movement in them, who knows. I actually have to use my finger to move mine because I tried shaking it but it didn't rattle. More specifically, mine moves up and down, towards the top and bottom of the phone, not in and out.

But, to each his own. Like I've already said, if it bothers someone that much then I would also suggest bringing it back, the phone cost too much to be that frustrated :)
