AT&T Invitation to Update to 6.0

So I just got a message from AT&T that I can update to Android 6.0. Believe it or not, this is my first time to update to a different version of Android. Can someone review with me the steps for the cleanest update? All of my contacts are backed up on Google, and everything else can be restored. Do I just do a factory reset and then install the update? Anything else I should watch out for or be aware of? Is there an easy way to save my test messages? If not, I can just make a few notes and will be fine without them.

Finally, what info will I need after the factory reset to set up my phone again? I clicked on "Remind Me Later," but should the offer to install Android 6.0 reappear after I restart the phone? And are there any contraindication for installing it on a Note 5?

Thanks for answering my newbie questions.

You don't need to do a factory reset. Just say yes and let it install the update. Nothing will be deleted.

Even though I don't have to do a factory reset, isn't it a good idea to get the cleanest possible install and eliminate possible problems? Unlike most people, I don't keep all my life on my phone, so restoring shouldn't be too terrible.

That was the case a few years ago, but OS updates seem much better engineered now. You'll find varying advice, but my own recommendation is not to reset unless you find you're having persistent problems.

So I just wiped the cache and updated the phone to Android 6.0. Only issue so far is the missing toggle for Mobile Data in the pull down notifications. Otherwise, the phone seems to be working fine. Thanks.

Did you try pulling down twice? Now you pull don't once for some shortcuts and notifications then a second time for the full list of shortcuts.

I do not believe that the mobile data toggle is in the notification bar anywhere. Screenshot anyone?

I think the simplest advice would be, don't reset unless you are having issues. I have had nothing but good results since the update. Resetting is a huge time drain....except for those who don't do much in the way of customization or utilize their phone in a minimalist way.

I winced, did the update without preamble, and I haven't found any issues at all. Very grateful for that as I don't want to re-up my brain for a reset.

Also noted that a two-finger pulldown from the top gives you the whole list of shortcuts while a one-finger gives just the top row. Isn't that the way it was somewhere back in time?
