Hello,

I was hoping to find from my search past discussion about this, but not finding good match.

So, situation is, i have at&t wireless note 3 phone that has been legitimately unlocked (using at&t unlock code). It has the 5.0 update.

I would like to switch carrier, Verizon (or any other network carrier).

Now, what happens to software updates going forward? The phone is still at&t wireless, it powers up with at&t wireless boot logo, and such.

Say with T-Mobile SIM, i'm in their network with their SIM card.

The phone has been updated through at&t wireless through Lollipop release.

Once in T-Mobile network (or any other that is no longer at&t wiressless), can i still get T-Mobile note 3 updates?

Do i need to factory reset with T-Mobile SIM card in place, which will end up installing the T-Mobile default apps?

Anyone been in this situation?

Or, after switching carrier, the part of that is that i'm now stuck with last Android update from at&t wireless, and will no longer be able to get further Android updates from the new carrier, eg. T-Mobile?

Or, do i have to rely on something like Samsung Kies to get Android updates, going around the new carrier?

Thanks much.

First the att note 3 won't work on Verizon. You can use it on tmobile but won't get all the bands or features (like wifi calling) . With regards to updates, you need an active att sim to get the update, or Samsung inside best buy might do it for you.

You will not get the built in tmobile software. You don't need to do a factory data reset when changing sim

You sure you need an active SIM? I thought you could use an old AT&T SIM for that. And can't you also use Kies?

You can try an old sim, but I heard it won't work. I heard that kies won't work either, for the att variant

Thanks all for the replies.

So, perhaps i can turn this into more of general question.

In other words, when an unlock phone goes from one carrier to another, say the phone originated from at&t wireless. And goes to Verizon network (and suppose the phone will work in the new network), what i'm understanding is that there is nothing one can do about getting Android (and new carrier built-in software) updates from the new carrier.

In other words, once a phone is from at&t (or any other carrier), even if it becomes unlocked, there is nothing one can do to get Android updates from the new carrier, nor getting new carrier built-in software's. Is that right?

Thus, unless you hack your way into this (i.e. somehow find a way to place the new carrier version of Android and their built-in sw), the phone is pretty much stuck in the carrier that the phone was originally purchased from, correct?

And the nature of unlock just lets you hop from one carrier to another, and not so much the phone software update does not follow the carrier switch, right?

Thanks much.

Pretty much. A carrier specific phone, even sim unlocked, has the identical software. A sim unlock simply means that it can accept a sim from another carrier, nothing more

Verizon does allow updates via kies or its update utility, so it is really up to the original carrier
