At&t. sending mms

I noticed with my Nexus 6 sending and getting mms doesn't work with just WiFi - data needs emailed. On my note 4 I didn't need data on. I wonder why it varies by model

I just use the message app already on Nexus 6. Looks different from note 4- I imagine they have different ones. I also don't have marshmallow yet
