ATT Prepaid Samsung Captivate

I have Samsung Captivate and an att unlimited everything prepaid plan, everything works but the data doesn't , but whenever i insert my SIM into my old gophone the internet works, is it maybe the APN thats the problem? your help will be greatly appreciated.

I've noticed in the past the taking even an "at&t compatible" prepaid dumb phone and putting a regular at&t sin card in it will not work. Maybe the opposite is true as well?

Example: My roommate had an not-so-old dumb phone laying so she asked me if I could help her by adding a line to my at&t account and we could just add the sim to her "old" phone. I checked the internet for the frequency bands on the phone and sure it enough, it's all the same bands that at&t uses.

I get the sim in the mail, inserted it, and- nothing. I call at&t customer service, they ask me for the IMEI# and immediately they say, "this is a prepaid phone, it will not work with our sim.

That's funny since the phone is at&t signal capable and the sim slot is made for an at&t type sim.
