Once my phone is paid off can it be unlocked to work on other carriers, such as Verizon?

yes, you can unlock it by making a request through the website or calling, every one of my old ata&t phones have been unlocked through the website once they were paid off. not sure if it'll work on verizon though. most carriers have a section where you can check the imei for compatibility on their network.

Yeah it will work on Verizon , once its unlocked you put a Verizon sim it will load Verizon stuff .

Not my thread, but a quick related follow-up. Do the software updates then come through AT&T (well, not for me) or Verizon?

The Sim card inside will dictate software updates, as long it's sim unlocked.

Hmm, after seeing your answer, I was wanting to check and see if that would be the case with an MNVO like Fi, and what I found seems to suggest otherwise (https://support.google.com/fi/thread/3334493?hl=en). Have you heard this before by any chance?

"AT&T's customized software and their encrypted bootloader mandates any/all system updates come OTA via AT&T's network...The same issue would occur if you took your AT&T branded phone to Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, etc. No carrier, other than AT&T can update your AT&T branded Samsung device." (from a "Platinum Product Expert).

Though further down, while not helpful in terms of major carriers like Verizon for example, there is a response saying they were able to install T-mobile firmware and get OTA updates with their Fi sim.

Not sure with Fi , if it's by tmobile then it should get from tmobile. All carrier and unlocked Samsung s9,note9 etc are bootloader locked , all the carrier firmware are universal meaning you can flash any carrier firmware with each other only sim will dictate what provisions get installed being that phone is sim unlocked, now if it's not sim unlocked can still flash other carrier firmware but since it's not sim unlocked a other carrier sim wouldn't change it.

So if your phone is a Att sim unlocked version and you use tmobile sim , tmobile splash screen ,provision will be on it and software updates as it will prompt to reconfigure network provisioning and reboot.

In my picture example I have unlocked note 10+
Using tmobile sim
Tmb/tmb/xaa indicates its unlocked(xaa)

If it was a Att phone , with tmobile sim ( network unlocked)
Tmb/tmb/Att last one is what orginal phone was the other 2 get sim provisions and their updates.

I hope I made it little more clearer.20200402_133650.jpeg

Unsurprisingly it seems you are definitely more informed than the "platinum product expert." Just to clarify, is SIM unlocked different from network unlocked? In other words when I (or the OP) have the carrier unlock the phone, I assume that equals SIM unlocked?

Sim unlocked and network unlocked is same they sim unlocked.

You dont have to flash another carrier firmware , once its paid and sim unlocked if you put a different sim it will configure it automatically for you , it will be like having that carrier phone .

Your welcome ,glad I can help .

Great. I'm thinking I might finally leave AT&T after my latest issues with them and try Fi out. Seems maybe if I can get a T-Mobile sim to get their firmware, then I might be able to get updates with Fi sim.
