Attaching external USB storage to Evo?

I figure the answer is "NO", but it does bear asking. I think it's an interesting idea.

It would be cool to be able to attach the microUSB cable to my phone and on the other end of the cable plug in a USB thumb drive (I already have the female-female coupler from another project). I have tried it to no avail, and was wondering if there was a reason this would not work either due to voltage issues powering the USB, or if Android 2.1 (or 2.2) would not support an external storage device?

This is called "USB host." Saw a thread at XDA saying it could be possible (HD2 and N1 both support it I think) but not natively. Might have to wait for FroYo or a custom ROM.
