Auto rotate problems

Should the phone be able to switch from portrait to landscape based on the position you're holding the phone?

I have "auto rotate" checked, but the home screen stays in portrait no matter how I hold the phone, but will switch to landscape if I open the slider.

E-mail will not display in portrait mode at all if "auto rotate" is enabled - if I turn it all the way around (upside down) it will flip to landscape in the other direction. If I uncheck "auto rotate" it the e-mail is in portrait if the slider is closed, landscape when open.

Similar problems with other apps...
Is this behavior normal?

I found that the home screens and the dock is not going to rotate, I have tried a couple of launchers that did rotate the dock but I wasnt completelyt satisfied with them so I am still on the hunt.

If a launcher can do it I dont see why it cant be done from the factory.

First Jim my email works in portrait and in landscape with auto rotate checked so it doesn't sound like yours is working correctly. This is with me using the HTC Since email that comes on the device I haven't tried any third party email apps. The home screen in Sense stays in portrait until you open the keyboard I think HTC did this because of the phone screen. When in the phone screen and in portrait mode the 10 key doesn't show you have to have the keyboard open to input numbers.

Does that answer your question,
Dave
