Auto screen brightness still not working

OK so i moved from the note 10.1 2014 edition to the tab s2 9.7. On my old tablet the screen wound never automatically dim. That seems to be the case on the tab s2 as well. It is on auto brightness, and it goes from dim to bright no problem. But when I turn the lights off I'm sitting there in the dark with the tablet on full brightness until I lock the screen and then unlock it. Only then will the screen auto dim. Anyone else have this problem?
