Auto screen dimming and battery life

The dimming of the screen on white backgrounds is really annoying on my mate 20 Pro.
I've got auto brightness off and when I go to Google or reddit it dims to really low brightness automatically. I found a fix online which was to turn off a readability in sunlight setting in the dev options, then turn on performance mode and restart. This seems to be working, but I've been wondering if performance mode will reduce the battery life significantly? I haven't been able to find anything online of someone testing the two.

Also today my battery life hasn't been particularly great. With performance mode off, 12.5hrs use, 1.5hr screen on time and the whole time on phone network, not WiFi I'm down to 59% battery. It seems like people are getting 6 hrs screen on time and still have 20% left, how is this happening?

The Mate 20 Pro uses an AMOLED screen, so the brighter it is, the more battery it uses. (The ideal wallpaper is solid black.)

41% battery use in 12.5 hours isn't bad, it's pretty good. On another note, constantly bring the battery down to 20% will kill it in about 6 months. The best battery usage is about 90% to 40%. Don't overcharge (that leads to battery heat, which is no good for the battery) and don't let it drop below 40%. (Also, with winter upon us, don't let the phone get colder than you're comfortable with. If you're going to be outdoors, keep the battery in an inside pocket. Freezing the battery isn't good for it either.)

I have yet to see this happen on my phone. I've done everything I can to get it to and it won't.

I have got all the options on which people say to use and it still happens.

my pro doesn't dim at all

Happens to me too. it's quite annoying but there's no definite fix for it right now
