auto sleep/wake case for Tab S 10.5

Does the galaxy tab s 10.5 have an auto sleep/wake feature when you use an external case?

My ipad used to have this and it is a nifty feature. But if the tablet does have this the otterbox case does not

Yup, it does. Just make sure that it's not a 'cheap' one with a badly placed or overly-powerful magnet and you should be fine (a misplaced or too strong magnet can cause interference with the touch screen).

That is a good to hear. The case I bought is an Otterbox Defender case. Could it be that this case does not have that feature?
The case was expensive.

If it does not, then does anyone know of a rugged case with the auto sleep/wake?

Without knowing the exact otterbox model, I couldn't say but if it's not working, then chances are the case doesn't have the magnet for the auto-sleep feature. I never use rugged cases (too much bulk) so I'll let others chime in for this.
