An upbeat Nexus 7 post - don't pass out from shock;
I gave up on my pre-order and went to Sams Club. I had ordered an 8Gig, and all Sams had was 16Gig. That was fine with me. I should have bought 16 in the first place. I called Google and after 45 minutes on hold I told them to cancel. They said why no, we can't cancel! The shipping process is too far along. What shipping process? There is no update on my wallet account...
Anyway, I told him I'd just refuse shipment and began playing with the 7. The display is awesome, I love the backing material, the display is awesome, it's FAST, the display is awesome....
I like the display
I loaded up my pile o' apps and started playing. Excellent touch response. The display is... (oh, shut up, Mike). The device seems a bit lighter than my Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus. And it's faster. Display is not as bright as the Samsung, but it's clearly higher pixel density. It looks to me like a Retina display on an iPad 3, or the high density display on an Acer A700, both of which are beautiful. Everything is smooth and clean.
I keep thinking I want the new 7" iPad when it comes out, but I don't use my current iPad - I use my Android tabs, especially the Asus TF201 and 301. They just seem better in terms of OS (both running ICS). Which is a complete turnaround because I despised Android when I first tried it a few years ago. Now I love it.
JB is going to take a bit of getting used to. I don't really like Google Now - I tend to use my tablets for fixed purposes (math and analysis, reading, netflix, notes - rarely searches), and I seem to set off Now accidentally all the time. Can I disable that? The transitions are slick and attractive. Everything works well, seems well made, and none of the problems being reported that I can see. No dead or stuck pixels, lines, display delamination, light leaks, etc.
Minor things - the grid density is higher, so I don't need to run a launcher to get my icons up there. I like the portrait locked home screen. I could wish for a brighter display, but it's adequate. No rear camera? Thats fine.
