Back button somehow not working properly

Ok, so recently i've noticed that the back button isn't working properly. It's not nearly as responsive as it was before nor as the other two software buttons. Many times when I have to press it twice or hold it 2-3 times as long as any other touch to get it to actually engage the "back" action. oddly enough, even when it doesn't work, the little circle area around it lights up, like on all the software buttons, so it is registering my touch.

Has this happened to anyone else? How is this even possible given the fact that's it's a software button? Any help would be nice cause it's annoying as hell.

Here is what I would try in this order:

1. Remove any screen protectors.
2. Factory reset the device.
3. RMA.

well crap, I was hoping to avoid factory resetting. Then again I was considering unlocking, rooting and flashing so maybe this is the push i need lol.
