Background Data and Unwanted Google Avatars

I can't stand unwanted Google avatars syncing with my contacts. Only way I can disable it is if I disable background data and auto-sync. This was working fine up until I realized that I couldn't use the Google talk app without re-enabling background data. Do I have any options here? I've disabled Google avatars that I don't chose in gmail, but Google is stubborn; they want their avatars at any cost

I have the same problem but with Twitter avatars. Haven't found a solution other than unlinking. It never saves the photo I choose for my contact if they're linked already, too. Quite annoying...
