Background service concern/confusion

I have several apps that I want to run as background services (email, twitter, weather, sports). All others I can sync each time I run the app. So I set the settings to reflect this.

Some apps, however, have no option in their settings to restrict them running as background services. They start background services even if I DO NOT RUN the app. I am constantly going in and killing those services. A while later, there they are running again.

Are these just badly behaving apps that I should remove from my TB and look for something better, or is there some sync setting that I am missing?

This would be an example of why not to use a task killer. Android keeps certain apps running as needed. By you killing the apps, you're just putting more drain on the system as you see... they will just start up again.
Which apps are they?... and I'll let you know if they should be running or not.
