Background sync

Here is what bothers me, what is background sync actually doing if I dont have any apps on sync?

Google acc sync, and facebook acc sync, both are disabled, but should I then have this icon in ''Battery Widget Reborn'' enabled or disabled?

I ask this because I had it disabled, and checked if I got new play store, nothing happened. I enabled this icon (background sync), and I get new playstore..

So, how is this background sync related to updates, if someone can explain to me

Hmm, maybe it is complicated so let me transform my question, here is one picture, when you go to settings -> data usage -> upper right corner, you get this

If you uncheck Auto-sync data , it says that you won't get updates and stuff, i think its play store updates etc. am I right? do you guys have this checked or unchecked?

No, as far as I know that has to do with syncing things like the aforementioned Facebook, Contacts, WhatsApp, G+, etcetera, not the Play Store. If you disable it you should still be notified of updates to apps.
