Backlight for Soft Capacitative Buttons

Reading through the forums, it seems there is no way to control the amount of time the backlight stays on. The way it is, the backlight goes off after a few seconds, regardless of the screen time out (which I have set for 30 seconds). I wish the buttons would match the screen with this regard.

Is this an Android setting? A Samsung specific specific setting (or lack of)?

New to Android (today) and so far loving it. So far only 2 things I'm missing... screen shots and Netflix.
